I saw that tool at Bed, Bath and Beyond a few months ago and thought that it didn't look that interesting but your pics make me want to get one. I think that it would probably make really good sautéed zucchini strands in olive oil. I may use my coupons and get one soon. We really like zucchini.
I don't think that planting zucchini plants off of the ground is going to make a bit of difference since the SVB's are moths and they fly from plant to plant. It really wouldn't be too hard to fly to a potted plant.
As for planting later - that doesn't work for me either. I don't know about other states but in PA the borer adults appear in mid to late June and start laying eggs which take a week to 10 days to hatch. They feed on the plant for about 4 weeks before the plant gives up and dies.
In my opinion, planting as early as possible and having a bigger plant when the borers emerge makes more sense because the plant will be bigger and stronger at that time. I do the same thing as Spring and plant a second crop to take over when the first crop dies. In PA the borers only have one generation per year but in the south, they may have 2. Pacific coast does not have them at all. Lucky you Lat!
Surprisingly, last year was my best year EVER with summer squash. For some reason I hardly had any SVB and the ones I did have didn't kill the plants.
I also inject with bt and I thought that was the reason for my success but others told me that the SVB were not as bad last year so I don't know.

Daiya is a really good cheese substitute. Is it like a good cheddar? No it's not. I wondered what was in faux cheese so I looked it up and it really does not sound all that good to me.
