My compost piles(I have 2) has wire around it and want to replace with wood pallets. I have a few. So I am asking just how you stand them up and/or tie them together? I am alone here so the easiest way possible would be best. Sunday I was moving a pallet by rolling it to the garden area and managed to stab myself with a split in a board and it went nearly 1/2 way through my hand. Hit a nerve and couldn't use my hand for awhile. Cleaned it, put antibiotic ointment on it and iced it for nearly 2 hours. There was a little swelling and black and blue but was glad I could drive the next day. After the morning run I went to a URGENT care place... 3 hours later I got a prescript for an oral antibiotic and a tetanus shot. Swelling is down today. I count my blessings for a short lived pain and minimal after effect.

Yikes, glad your hand is better. I've never used pallets for a compost bin, so I have no answers. I have the wire cage too.

lilolpeapicker, no guilt here, but are you wearing gloves when working outside? I’m thinking my skin isn’t as tough as it used to be…trying to be more faithful to wearing them, even though they make my hands stink. Glad that you got checked out at Urgent Care.

Yikes! That sounds like a close call pea.
We actually disassembled pallets to build the bin so mine wouldn't be an easy/simple answer to your question. But I would think you could stand them up and nail them together to form the walls. Or use L-brackets to connect and hold them together.Maybe use something to tie them together temporarily, so that they hold in place while you nail?

Used different shaped brackets I had in my mess of hardware- L, T and elbows or whatever they call them, plus screws and a drill. Went together fast.

lilolpeapicker, yikes! Glad you're alright now. When my parents were building their porch, mom got a pretty large splinter in her hand and because of where it was located, it had to be surgically removed.

If I recall correctly from my wood-pallet sectioned compost piles back in NY, Mr. Breezy & my father screwed them together.
And always wear gloves when working with pallets. The wood is raw & chock full of sharp bits & splinters, not to mention possible hidden creepy-crawlers that can bite/sting.

emmsmommy, how awful for your mom! If I had to do that I wouldn't have been able to work.

emmsmommy, how awful for your mom! If I had to do that I wouldn't have been able to work. Thankfully the surgeon did it in her office, but even she was skeptical. Mom was still working and only missed the day of the removal and the day after. It had been in her hand over a month though.
