I tend to grow more things than I can either eat, preserve, or pick. As a result, I give a fair amount away to friends and neighbors, even sometimes putting it on the street for walkers to take. Zucchini and tomatoes come to mind. I also love giving away bouquets of flowers to walkers who stop to chat. My favorite neighbor to give to lives across the street. He is into wine and occasionally gives me a bottle of nice stuff. Nicer than I would ever buy. At the moment I'm two glasses into a bottle of a fine Brunello - all because I've been giving him my extra Magenta lettuce. Win-win. What do you do with your extras?

Give my extras (usually summer squash, tomatoes, and okra) to family and neighbors. Sometimes when I'm lucky I get ears of fresh corn, tomatoes, or a hearty bottle of Belgian ale in return.

I give a lot of tomatoes, eggplants, and other extras to friends, but some things I have that friends don't use, and I give these to a Mexican market, and an Indian market, and the owners give me discounts, when I buy things. I just harvested the epazote from the hydroponics, and took it up there, and he loves it when I bring him that, or the peppers, in the summertime.
Last season, one family I know, and used to give a lot too, ended up with a garden almost as big as mine!

I scaled back my garden several years ago so I don't have a whole lot of extra. My garden sits up against a coyote fence with a neighbor. My green beans grow up that fence and she has my blessing to pick whatever beans poke through the fence onto her side. She and her grandson come and pick when beans are in season. I also share with her a handful of chiles, a few tomatoes, 2 or 3 heads of garlic as I'm harvesting them. She is always thrilled. It doesn't have to be a lot to make someone feel like they have a special treat. And I always send a friend or family- here for a day visit or as a house guest- home with some tomatoes, a bag of greens, a few chiles, a pumpkin, a bouquet of herbs- whatever is ready when they are here.

I'm going to start selling mine so I can buy your house and become friends with your neighbor.

When I was working, all my extras went to coworkers. Now family and neighbors get the extras. I had a friend that would trade home made hand creams for fresh eggs, but she moved away .

Family, friends and folks that I don’t know their name are welcome to the extra plant starts and extra garden goodie’s. Sweetheart gets a big kick out of the little ones that come by picking out a pumpkin to take home. Trading for smiles……

I share with family and friends, I only sell plants in Spring and garlic after harvest. I usually have some things ready in the fridge to pass out, especially to an elderly lady who walks her neighbor's Yorkie. She uses 2 canes and is a very funny lady, we always have an entertaining visit. I'll have more extra this year as in previous years a lot went to my friend who passed away. I plan to give to her daughters when they are in town.

I tend to grow a lot more than I can eat.
Sometimes I grow things and never even harvest them, I just watch them germinate and grow and then flower and scatter seed and then decompose.
I tend to give away a lot of produce, but I prefer to give produce to people who will do some canning/preserving with it and share it. I give away more plants and seeds than I do produce though. I always start hundreds of tomatoes and peppers and give away most, try to encourage everyone to garden, anyone who comes to see me always goes home with some seeds and plants. I also like to trade produce with people who hunt+fish for local protein, I threw all my eggs into the garden basket and got good at it, but I neglected hunting and fishing and am not very good at it yet. I gave a bunch of zucchini to a guy with pigs one summer and he gave me some pork shoulder the next spring. I’m unfortunately in an urban area, and I get random people who stop by and ask for produce and flowers, sometimes I give them some, but I would prefer if everyone would just start a garden and not freeload 😂

I always grow more plants than we or my family can use. Shared with a neighbor last year and will probably take several to the community garden this year if they can be used. In 2021 I had an abundance of sweet peppers and was basically giving to anyone who could use them.

gianna, Wheelgarden, pepperhead212, desertwoman, reuben, datgirl, centralilrookie, Mumsey, raphanus, emmsmommy, binnylou, I am like all of you, growing more than I could ever use. Along with family and neighbors, many people at work look forward to the growing season as many get the benefit of the garden. Most people from work don't have much to give back but to me the smile on their faces is payment enough. I get more from giving than getting back. My neighbors across the street clears my driveway when I am not home and a storm drops snow.

Extras? The way mom gives everything away I am lucky to harvest anything. Seriously, I trade with other gardeners, take surplus to work as well give to a local church that does a Saturday "open pantry". Tried a few years ago to get the CG to partner with a local chapter of Food-Finders...no interest.
