I would cook a turkey for me only, just to have all of the crisp skin, stuffing, roasted carrots and potatoes and the gizzard for myself.

We're cooking some of the meal and taking to daughter's house and doing a combined meal with her and her family. We have a couple of family members who have to be gluten free, so had to find an organic turkey to order in advance to avoid any additives that might be bad for them. Husband loves to make his homemade Caesar salad so we'll take that along with some home baked desserts, gluten free stuffing and a few other things. Hope no need to bring back masks for the holiday dinners.

I had to smile GD bec that’s the way I feel too.😀😀 I’m cooking. Right now I have 10 guests but there is always another person someone wants to bring. I have a 12# turkey, small for us. $38.00. Ouch. Mash pot, carrots and parsnips, dressing, sweet potatoes and apples, pumpkin pie…made crusts and refrigerated the pans today.. the creamed spinach sounds yummy…maybe I’lldo that too. Need something green. I reuse Chinese takeout trays and make extra dinners to freeze . I use up all the food..and start a stock pot w the bones. Turkey dinners in Jan taste yummy. I give away dinners to guests if they ask too. Two of my girls are w in-laws this holiday. But I’ll have them all for Christmas Eve dinner, so I’m happy.

Thanksgiving is currently in limbo depending on how hubby and I feel. I told mom they could go ahead if the wanted to but she said that it would only be them and my aunt, so maybe we'll push it back to Sunday.

Not sure yet, may go to Dad's or sis's. They do all the traditional dishes, most of which I don't eat anymore.
We just may stay home, DH wants Cornish hen which is in the freezer. Thinking of baked sweet potatoes, oven roasted veggies with cranberries, deviled eggs, etc.

With our plans to be at mom’s for a very traditional noon meal being quickly reconsidered, as sweetheart tested positive for Covid today, we will be celebrating at home together. I picked up a spiral cut glazed ham some sweet potatoes and pie crust to add to a few ingredients that are in the freezer. We will truly be “ home for the holiday”

On behalf of all of us who are inept in the kitchen, I say: Thank you for all the time, trouble, and effort that goes into a great meal.

Wheelgarden, the preparation for and cooking the Thanksgiving meal isn’t trouble for me. It’s a reason to get out a tablecloth and set the table in a more proper manner than what I do on a daily basis. It’s a reason to polish the silverware that hasn’t been used in a while. It’s a reason to bake that apple pie and enjoy the fragrance of apple and cinnamon drifting through the house. And then have someone to share it with. ..not just hubby and me. And, as the fragrance of the baking pie is fading, the smell of roasting turkey and stuffing takes over. Oh, joy. There’s joy in cooking the cranberry sauce, watching it change color to a glorious red. There’s joy when the dinner rolls come from the oven with the perfect color. And the scent of yeast bread. There’s joy in finding that the cooked turkey has shared enough pan drippings to make a good turkey gravy. There’s joy when tasting the mashed potatoes and finding them “just right” There’s also the joy in discovering that “I can still do this”. At the age of 75, I can let myself think that the task is too big, or I can’t do this anymore. I’m just considering that the cooking of tomorrow’s meal is a practice run for Christmas. Gobble, gobble. 🦃

A funny thing happened yesterday - I was talking to the lady, whose house I'm going to for TG, and asking if there was anything else I could make, and bring over; I was already set to bring over some brownies, and that butterscotch pumpkin pie, but she said they already had 2 pies, so I don't have to make that, but if I could make one of those dals I told her about the day before, that would be plenty! Not traditional TG fare, but she said she was talking to her kids about it, and both would rather have that from me than a pie! Mind you, this is the Indian lady that offered to pay me to make these things for her once a week! Another friend came by, as I was finishing this - very similar to that last dal I made, except I added some black chickpeas, potatoes, and used ghee for the fat - and I told him it was to take over there, and he thought I was trying to torture him! But I gave him one of the last two bowls from the last batch, and he thought the same thing I did - that it tasted like it had some sort of meat in it. This batch tastes even more like that, probably because of the ghee. Dal, with butternut squash and potatoes, with kala chana - black chickpeas. by pepperhead212, on Flickr Now I have to go make the brownies, and that's easy...except only eating one, before taking them over there.

Yummm. With the pan being foil lined, do the brownies lift out of the baking pan for easy cutting? I’ve never done that…usually just bake in a glass dish. Is there a benefit?

binnylou Yes, they lift out easily, once chilled, and I have the "release" fool in there, which works even better, but regular foil is what I used for many years, and that works, too.
