Since I have an intolerance for ibuprofen and Aleve the doctor prescribed Meloxicam for the inflammation in my knee. After reading the warnings and side effects on the information sheet, I seriously doubt if I'll take it as I'd rather have a swollen knee than risk heart issues.
I know turmeric is supposed to be great for inflammation and from what I've read black pepper increases its effects. Do you know of any other herbs that might help or do you have any experiences to share?

yes! turmeric with black pepper is considered the top herbal remedy for inflamation. Rosemary (especially as a tea) and ginger are at the top of the list, as well. Green tea, is anti inflammatory, as well. What you eat definitely affects inflammation, as well. As a quick tutorial....avoid fried foods, dairy, spicy foods, lamb, shrimp, and crab, minimize red meat. Veggies like celery and asparagus are considered cooling foods, as well as raw veggies and deep sea fish. Chicken in moderation, too.

Can't imagine giving up any of that.

emmsmommy, have you considered essential oils? I make a blend of peppermint, rosemary, and basil (diluted of course) that we both use for knees, shoulders, lower back, and the back of our hands. It’s quite fragrant, so I only use it when I won’t be going to town. If I needed something for pain relief for shopping/errands, I use a purchased cbd trauma salve, especially for lower back.

Thank you desertwoman, binnylou. Right now I consume very little meat but mostly it is chicken. Drinking herbal infused tea without sugar lately as I'm trying to avoid as much sugar as possible. Good news is I'm down about 25 pounds from this time last year but my cholesterol is close to the too high mark, so need to make more changes to my diet. As for the inflammation, I've realized it's really no worse than it has been for the last few years, it's the pain and popping that's been bothering me. Now that's not to say the inflammation doesn't bother me, but it's not hindering my mobility very much yet.

Read a couple of weeks ago that olive oil has been used for years as a rub for arthritis pain and swelling done a couple of times a day and has been actually effective with no side effects. It might be something that works for you too. I have also used a small amount of tumeric added to foods when I get some aches and pains (such as from gardening) and it does seem to work very well too, especially with added black pepper.

heirloomfan, are you using powdered turmeric or fresh? I'd like to find fresh but not available locally and shipping is outrageous. I am drinking a turmeric and ginger tea but haven't noticed much improvement as I've been abusing working the knee quite a bit lately.

Turmeric, like many things, can help in suitably low doses but have serious negative side effects if the quantity is too large over a period of time. I use some in a spice mix, but it's a very small amount, as it doesn't take much of a good variety to add its flavor. Good turmeric, with 4-7% curcumin, is great, but can be hard to find from a reputable seller. I now buy a jar every few years from an Amazon vendor - the only place I could find good quality. Fortunately, it doesn't go bad. It's $14, but lasts for years. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ENMZ6IW
