Aka "Oblivia", since she was always clueless (she's the big white kitty - the other one being infamous "Ming the Merciless"). And who just passed away right in front of me here 20 minutes ago. She'd been having multiple health issues, & has been on thyroid meds for the last couple of years. She had been in serious decline these last three days, & in fact we had planned to take her to the vet tomorrow for the "last hurrah", & I am rather glad that she passed away here at home instead of having to go through that stress.
Poor Mr. Breezy, who is heartbroken, will now be out in the yard the rest of the day playing Digger O'Dell yet again. And then I'll be shrub-shopping to find something nice to plant over kitty. Sad times.

It IS hard, but at the same time I'm glad it happened here at home with me instead of at the vet's office.
Mr. Breezy is out prepping the gravesite. Miserable heat here for this type of task - 91 with a heat index of 94.

Good she was home and could pass peacefully. I have a beautiful rose that marks the spot where many of the guinea pigs and others from the school veterinary program are burried. Guinea pigs and hamsters don't live very long. My favorite bird, Corey, who lived a very long life for a crow, is under a peony. Sweet reminders when they bloom.

That'll be an idea I'll consider. I'd love a rose, but between the deer & Rose Rosette disease, roses have a brief lifespan. Since she was such a large round cat, I was thinking of maybe a Snowball verbena, since verbena isn't quite the deer candy so many other shrubby plants are. But a white-flowering peony would also be a good choice. There's actually enough room to do both.

Bravo Olivia (maybe not so clueless in this instance? ).What a great way to go- It is far less stressful. Sad but lovely too. It's hard to lose our 4 legged friends and you've had enough losses already. Our Miss Grace went on her terms as well, 4 1/2 years ago. She is buried under one of the lilac bushes, which was one of her favorite spots to snooze.on a summer day.

Sorry about your kitty, breezygardener. David Austin has several “Olivia” roses to choose from…should you feel brave enough to try a rose.

David Austin has several “Olivia” roses to choose from…should you feel brave enough to try a rose. Thanks - I'll do some research, but roses typically do not do well here. The original builder/owner of our house had several lovely roses, but he was a diehard hunter & I think the deer naturally steered clear of the place back then. The first couple of years we didn't have any problems, but then when the deer apparently realized that we don't hunt & also kept our dogs leashed, that they had free run of the place & that was that. Some roses did survive, but then the dreaded "Rose Rosette" disease hit our county, & that took care of the rest of the roses. I do have some "Dr. Huey" roses in tubs on the deck, but also spotted some Rose Rosette on some wild Multiflora roses the other day, so after I cut that out & trash it, we'll see what happens.

I'm so sorry for your loss. How kind of her to take this final episode into her own paws. It is always sad to lose a good pet.

Losing a beloved pet is always so hard. Both of your cats are lovely; I wouldn't have guessed from the photo that "Oblivia" was ill. I am glad though that she passed at home and could be with you; I'm sure that was very comforting to her.
I thought of Ophelia's (Hamlet) observations on flowers;
"There's rosemary, that's for remembrance..."
You could also create a wreath around her burial site and include multiple flowers representing remembrance.

I wouldn't have guessed from the photo that "Oblivia" was ill. That photo is from 2012. You wouldn't have recognized her today - she was sadly & literally skeletal.
