I know it is recommended to lift/divide iris well after they have bloomed- late summer. Has anyone successfully lifted iris as soon as early June or even while they are blooming?

desertwoman, I have moved them after immediately after blooming many times. I cut the leaves back and make sure to baby them for a few weeks until they're established in their new homes. Sometimes my bearded irises even bloom the following year.

I've never transplanted until well after blooming is over, but I rarely moved them unless the squirrels had already done so. They were experts at moving tulips, then I noticed that one iris appeared next to the garage, and it wasn't me who moved it.

I planted some Moss Rose seed that I saved. Never done it before. After planting, I read about them, it said to refrigerate for a week....nope. They were in fruit room at 58* all Winter. They sprouted in 3 days, a gazillion of them. Think I planted them too soon.....

About 2 years ago I bought an iris plant. Couldn't plant right away because the spot I wanted to put it already have a huge sunflower there. So at the end of the season after removing the sunflower and root then planted the iris.
Last year much green and a couple short lived iris grew, This year it's all green so far. Everywhere else I go I see irises galore. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong or how I can make ir right?

I'm not an Iris expert or even a fan,but I have a patch of them that a neighbor gave us when we moved in. I totally ignore them and they bloom every year except last year. I thought oh good I can get rid of them, wouldn't you know it, they are in full bloom bigger than ever. So you never know, maybe next year.

I picked up an Immortality iris at Lowes this morning while picking up bar oil for hubby. It's supposed be a rebloomer which will be a treat! I had a small light yellow iris that I shared with Grandma several years ago and it rebloomed several times a season for her but never did here. Mine got crowded out so need to grab another start of it. I actually still have some iris in the wading pool planter from two years ago and they bloomed again this year so evidently neglect and less than perfect conditions don't seem to faze them. I did go grab a few of the old ugly iris from over the bank and put them in a pot last week.
There were two varieties here when I moved in: a pale yellow and an ugly washed-out purple and I planted them along the driveway. Well the yellow is still there but the other one died out. They're so much smaller than most bearded iris and I just assume they're a really old variety and keep them going for nostalgia. Actually the pale yellow one has a magnificent scent but can't remember if the other one did or not.

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong or how I can make ir right? a couple of things come to mind. If the rhizome is too buried it won't bloom. You should be able to see the top pf the rhizome at the soil surface, while the roots coming off the rhizome are well buried. . If it's covered with soil or mulch, just clear that off. And iris often times don't bloom for a year or two after planting, dividing, or transplanting. I wouldn't give up. Give then another year or two. And don't over water.

I did read about not overwatering so that is embedded in my grey matter. Thx, desertwoman , will look to clear the top if it is covered. I'm glad to try something. I may have added more mulch last year. Should I also thin out the growth? There seem to be many more than even last year.

I had some yellow ones from my moms house up in the front garden. They eventually died because the gutter would always overflow right above them.

Should I also thin out the growth? There seem to be many more than even last year. That's a good sign that they are reproducing! No need to divide them (thin out) yet. You can go several years before having to divide them. When you first plant an iris rhizome that one is called the 'mother' The mother then makes babies. The mother makes an iris stalk with flower. Once a flower has bloomed from that rhizome it will never make another flower. The next generation of babies then become 'mothers' and make the next season's flower stalks. So every few years it is suggested to thin out and divide iris, tossing out (don't compost) all the old mothers and any rotted or dried up rhizomes and replanting the healthy babies. I do this about every 4-5 years, depending on how my iris stand is performing. I've even gone longer than 5 years.

I helped step mom pull grass from iris yesterday. The cottonwood leaf mulch keeps weeds down considerably but some make it. They don't bloom, need thinned out but not in the mood for that. They have been in the same spot for years with literally no attention.
