I purchased 2 perennial salvia plants which I put in the ground yesterday. I am wondering if I should cut it back immediately or wait til all flowers are spent. It was full of flowers but there are some along the stem that are starting to to die. I was told where I got it that the flowers need to be cut back to bloom again. At what point would that be?

I pinch back any flowers. Let the energy go into rooting when it first goes in.

desertwoman, Pinching implies at the tip I am thinking. Someone told me to cut back the flowering stalk as the flowers fade so that it flowers again. Is that too severe?

Yes, I would cut back the flowering stalk too. And I would not necessarily wait until the flowers fade when first planting . Once the plant is established then I would pinch back the flower and stalk as the flower fades, to encourage more blooms.
