I've never done them before. Are they annuals?? If there are perennials I may want to add them to the garden.

In my garden, they sometimes overwinter. I’m guessing that if you cover with mulch, they would carry over.
As for staking them, I think the strength of the plant is determined by early pruning to produce a more robust plant. I like the tall Rocket snaps, and I usually end up giving them support with a surround of the green vinyl colored wire. Planting them closer together lets them support each other.

They are considered annuals but I have a couple of the tall Red Rockets that have over wintered for several years. They are not in a warm part of the garden or up against the house either- in fact they are in a more shaded but protected area. They have a leaf mulch from nearby trees.
I've never had any issues with plant strength but being on a high desert plateau, things don't usually grow as tall as in other climates so that may be why they do well without staking.

Wonder why my Cone Flowers are only half as tall as they should be? Very slow to bloom too. It's an established plant, never moved, nothing different done to it!

Blame it on the weather. Or maybe the flowers need a bit of compost added.

Mumsey , I’m experiencing the same with some of my perennials this year. The Cranesbill didn’t bloom, the Pentstemon had just a few blooms, the poppy never bloomed, Peony bloom was greatly reduced, False Indio did not bloom. Delphiniums returned, but were hip high instead of the usual “above my head” height…the same with the Meadow Rue. Daylilies are providing great bloom, including three that were possibly on their way out because of poor performance last year. Tall garden phlox is loaded with bloom, except for my favorite one. Stargazer Lilies…the four that provide a riot of color in the garden have a lot fewer flower buds. I fear that the plants are dealing with the Norway spruce trees taking nutrients from the soil. All plants are mulched, but I’ve not added compost for several years. The veggie garden has been getting the compost that I do have, and I’m not inclined to purchase compost. So much for this being the snapdragon thread 🤭

I finally got around to planting my winter snaps. It's just been too hot to do it earlier. I planted a mix of old and new seeds. A Yellow, a dark red called black prince, and two hybrids - Rocket and Potomic. We'll see what comes up in their respective containers.

gianna, do you save seed from your Rocket snaps? If so, how successful were the results? I miss being able to purchase individual colors from Pinetree.

do you save seed from your Rocket snaps? If so, how successful were the results? I miss being able to purchase individual colors from Pinetree. I saved the seed, but did not get around to growing them up last spring. The saved seed did germinate, but having other things to do, I never grew them on. And when planting new snaps last week, I used store-bought seed. It did concern me that the Rocket and Potomic were both hybrids, and while they obviously produced viable seed, if I was going to take the time and effort and water.. I wanted a sure end result. While hybrids can produce perfectly fine off-spring, for just a few $, I wanted to grow a sure bet. Unfortunately you can no longer get the seed in colors you want, so maybe it's worth the chance. Johnny's does sell Potomic snaps in individual colors, but not Rocket. Maybe someone else does. ps, the snap seeds I just planted are germinating well. The tiny things are in the sun now so they don't get leggy. Hope I don;'t kill them, lol.

Unfortunately Stokes is a canadian company that does not ship to the US. There is a company with a relatively primitive site that sells lots of flower seeds. GeoSeeds. They seem to sell Rocket in different colors.?? Look under the generic name Antirrhinum, then the variety. Their ordering system seems rather complex, and catalog confusing, but if you can't find the colors you want elsewhere, give them a look-see. I've never purchased from them, but flower farmers I was following seemed to like them for carrying many varieties and price. IIRC during covid their orders were backed up, but were said to be helpful over the phone. binnylou, if you are desperate, you can give them a try. The colors they list for Rocket. Call them and ask if they sell them separately. I think they might.

gianna, thanks for posting about GeoSeeds. It’s a real “turn on” for somebody who is thinking about cutting back. Did you see their Zinnia listing?

Did you see their Zinnia listing? Lol, ya think? Also their Rudbeckias and Costa snaps (too expensive at Johnny's). And while at it, Iceland poppies. And they are only 5 to 7 days to fulfill orders, and $6 for shipping under 100.... Then the reality of not really needing any seeds set in. But...

Unfortunately Stokes is a canadian company that does not ship to the US. I used to buy seed from them, but haven't for a while. I see from their catalog that they combined with another company in 2019 and say that they now sell to the US again, but only on a commercial level.

I had always thought Stokes did business in the US. I don't recall ever buying from them, but think I used to get their catalog. I always thought of them as a generic seed company like Jung, Parks, present day Burpee, and the like. Nothing special, but sometimes just handy.
