breezygardener, Do you have a neighbor that might have extra freezer room where you might park your goose?

and the firepalce! Or is that for a smelter? It's a crematorium, got a good deal on the place but I had to take the whole package. I think we can make it into a fireplace.

Well I'm keeping the food budget the same the next few months but I'm almost eliminating any expenditures (including seeds) beyond gas, utilities and pet food. Business has been good the last month or so but January through March has always been rough and then there's the fact that the new roof is going to cost more than anticipated. I'm also thankful that I have a good supply of laundry detergent, shampoos, etc... Also planning to empty the freezer so probably won't be buying as much food either. Oddly it's lunchmeat that I've noticed a shortage of lately. I rarely eat it but hubby does and both Walmart and Kroger never seem to have sufficient stock in the last month. I did manage to snag the last huge pack of toilet paper last time as it still seems to be in short supply as well.

With COVID about, and lots of shoppers expected before Christmas, I decided to go into store as infrequently as possible till January. So I stocked up on Costco things when last in Costco a couple weeks ago. Same for Trader Joe's. The garden takes care of all fresh veggie needs now that the Asian greens are pickable, plus the preserved things from summer.
Then this past week, I took advantage of holiday meat specials. Had to purchase $25 minimum to get the specials which can be difficult sometimes, but fortunately I wanted another good turkey for next spring/summer, so that took care of that. I got a nice, unsliced ham at 99 cents/pound, and a small sale rib roast as a treat. Then cut that into steaks. Haven't had a good steak for over 2 years. Fortunately I'd been emptying the freezer to make room for the expected seasonal bounty. Turkey is in the freezer, and the ham needs to be sectioned and wrapped and frozen. It's in cryovac so that can wait.
Except for maybe eggs and dairy, I think I could make it till the end of January.

breezygardener, Do you have a neighbor that might have extra freezer room where you might park your goose? Sorry I missed this. Unfortunately no - we just play catch as catch can when the time comes. Tomorrow we'll be out goose-hunting. Supermarket goose hunting, that is. If we don't have any luck, it'll be duck this year. Will seem kind of strange though - we haven't not had goose for Xmas in over 40 years.

Today it was lunchmeat, dry dog and cat food, canned cat food, most of the inexpensive coffee pods and beef gravy that was out of stock. I'd planned to do curbside pickup but so many things on my list were out of stock I ended up going inside. Not sure if the gravy is an ongoing thing as I was picking it up for a quarantined friend, but coffee pods were fully stocked before Christmas as I bought a few new flavors for Mom.

I stayed home, but Mr. Breezy went out this morning to pick up a few things & said that the shelves were pretty sparse at all the grocery stores he visited. Most likely due to the recent severe storm that dumped between 7" & 14" & knocked out power everywhere. The main route for tractor-trailers - I-95 - was closed for almost 48 hours due to accidents, & the videos showed lots of food-transporters stuck.

And some of that food stranded in the I-95 incident went to the people on the road! What a gesture of human compassion! I can't even imagine being stuck on the road in good conditions.

What a gesture of human compassion! Yes!! People really came thru for their fellow man. One guy who was returning from a trip to Florida was going from car to car handing out oranges from sacks he was bringing back for friends & family.

Just got back from the grocery store. 2 stores were out of oyster crackers. I guess it's soup season and all. Pasta sauce shelf was pretty empty too. Good news was that Aldi had their chocolate back in stock. They haven't had the dark chocolate since before Christmas.

What a gesture of human compassion! Another sweet story - a Schmidt Bakery truck that was stranded on I-95 got authorization from the corporate office to distribute all the bread on the truck to anyone of the stranded that wanted it. Folks helped the driver distribute the bread & rolls to as many folks who wanted/needed it - many of whom had elderly &/or kids on board that hadn't eaten anything in 20 hours.
