We get this periodically. No signs of mice or other insect pests... Alan

Does it happen to apples still on the tree or on the ground? Do you have deer or skunks, raccoons or other such creatures? It is such an evenly round hole- I've not seen something like that on our apples.

Unfortunately it happens on apples in the fruit bowl in the kitchen. #1 wife put apples in the bowl yesterday morning and by noon it was there. The fruit bowl is the only food that is out. Kitchen is always scrubbed clean and Pest control every 6 months at least. The dog and cat patrol regularly. But, there it is... It happens with some regularity, maybe once twice a month.

If they are store-bought apples that might have been in storage for awhile, I'd guess some sort of fungal or bacterial rot. Critters aren't usually that neat.
I notice you live in Texas, not Roswell...

armjr, is this a hole or a depression in the surface? Research Bullseye Rot.

Yes, surface. Nothing on the interior. I'll tell her it's bacterial or fungal rot. Then we'll have mice, insects, and bacterial/fungal rot all running neck and neck for first place for the grossest apple eating culprit.
Thanks...

Kind of a wild guess, but if these are apples from a store, it could have happened while handling. I've seen some pretty rough unloading of produce in some stores.
