I am looking at purchasing a spice grinder to grind up(after dehydrating), cayenne and habanero peppers, basil, oregano and maybe tomatoes. Any suggestions?

I have a Braun dry grinder, and a Chef Pro wet/dry grinder. Both work well, though I don't use the latter as much, but many wet pastes need that, or a heavy mortar and pestle. That Braun is over 15 years old (and has ground a lot of spices!), and I have a backup new one in the cupboard that I forgot about! Before that, I had a Müeller for over 20 years, before one blade broke. Recently, after discovering the extra Braun I had, I gave a friend another backup spice grinder I had gotten at Aldi's, because it was so cheap. Still worked well, the one time I tested it.

I’ve used a simple Braun coffee grinder for years without too much trouble. I wonder though if a simple burr grinder for coffee might be better. Their advantage is they supposedly grind into more equal fragments rather than the shredding into a multitude of size ranges as a regular bladed coffee grinder does. Might have to try one for spices. I have a fairly fancy one for coffee and it definitely does a much better job with a much more even grind

I too use a simple old Braun coffee grinder that I've had since the late 70's/early 80's. Still going strong.

I use a mortar and pestle, but I only grind peppercorns. Is there an advantage to an electric grinder?

I use an old pharmacy mortar and pestle. It's a tough old thing. I grind all my herbs and spices in it.

davidjp, Fortunately I asked my wife if we had any coffee grinders and we have two! One a Braun rotary blade and the other is a burr grinder. So, as they have had minimal use, I just need to clean them up and see which will grind to the consistency I am looking for.

I too also use a mortar & pestle, but usually just for Szechuan peppercorns.

I use my molcajete for some things, and my granite mortar for some, but for all the spices I grind up, I wouldn't have time on those things!

davidjp, after dehydrating the habaneros, I used the rotary blade grinder to break up the sections, then poured the contents into the burr grinder. And the result was exactly what I wanted...fine ground habaneros with no whole seeds. Perfect!
