For some time now I have been telling people that rather than buying something called "topsoil" to look for a soil mix that is about 45 percent sand, 25 percent silt, 25 percent clay, and 5 percent organic matter. I have found out lately that silt has become somewhat difficult to obtain or is too contaminated to be used, so of late I have been suggesting a soil mix of about 45 percent sand 45 percent clay, and 10 percent organic matter. That link, lisann, is a good article.
My soil, here, is sand and I have made it better by adding a lot of organic material to get the amount of organic matter in the soil to 6 to 8 percent. That can be tough since it does require a lot of organic material. I have seen some suggest that soil should contain around 50 percent organic matter, something nigh on to impossible to attain and probably because of a misunderstanding of the difference between organic material (what we add to soil) and organic matter (what is part of the soil mix). It can take tons of organic material to raise the amount of organic matter in soil 1 percent.
