It was getting top heavy, I'd been cutting the very top off from time to time. There are 3 main stalks. The other day I cut one pretty far down, removed some leaves and put it in water. Wondering if it's going to root eventually, the remaining 3 leaves look good. If it works I'll cut the tops off the other 2 stalks. Nothing to lose really, got the original plant at Home Depot 4 years ago for $3 and it was big then.

This experiment was a success. I now have 2 new pots of Dieffenbachia. However the original remaining plant looks odd with no top, but is sending out shoots. I'm thinking about cutting it into chunks and rooting just for fun.

Was thinking of getting 1 but was just reading they are toxic to dogs and cats. The dog wouldn't get near one but the cat may chew on the leaves....

yes it is poisonous, a.k.a. "Dumb Cane" It has calcium oxalate crystals (raphides) that cause burning, irritation and swelling. Rarely is the reaction life threatening, but still need to keep it out of the reach of pets, children and idiots who eat things on a dare. As you may have heard from me before, raphides are also found in my nemesis, Virginia creeper. It was bad enough on my skin. Would hate to think of it in my mouth and throat.
