This morning we had to put our beloved "Little Rat Dog" (Rat Terrier/Beagle cross), as we called her, to sleep. She had reached a horrible state in just the last couple of days, & even with cooking special meal for her, carrying her around, etc., etc. we realized we were only keeping her around for ourselves & not for her benefit. So our wonderful vet, even though overbooked, squeezed us in & took care of us in her usual kindly way. We adopted her in 2007, so she's been around for a LONG time, & I can't seem to get used to not having her around. Neither can Ming the Merciless, our adopted/dump-captured Siamese. The two of them were best buddies. This is the first time we have been completely dogless in 20 years, since we always had several at one time. But now they've all passed on.

She came to us with a very interesting background. Her previous owner passed away alone at home from complications of diabetes, & the body & the dog weren't discovered for over a week (ugh!). Mr. Breezy said that maybe we should sleep with one eye open for awhile in case she started nibbling on us in our sleep. Who knows what she might of been dining on during that week a la Donner Party.

What a couple! Sorry that time came to do what you had to do. Even though you know the time was coming it is still hard. Good night sweet girl.

That cat ("Ming the Merciless") was the dog's best buddie after her doggie bud (our Coonhound "P.D" (aka "Poochie Dog") passed away a few years ago. In fact, poor Ming has been insatiable for attention & keeps looking around for "his" dog.

Do you know that I STILL find myself listening for the dog - whether barking for her dinner, wanting to go out, playing with the cat?? And when 4 p.m rolls around, I STILL find myself going to start the brown rice, et al, for her meal? Geesh.

breezygardener, don’t expect that to change immediately. It takes a while for the mind and heart to accept the loss of your pet companion.

They are woven into us and it takes time to adjust to them not being physically present.

Sorry about your loss. Dogs are missed more than most people sometimes.
