I've been wondering what folks here think of the various survival shows on tv. Beyond being an apparent trend, sometimes totally ridiculous and reflecting a lack of common sense, I eventually decided that there are a few who actually do reflect a real bond with the land. I'm thinking of the actor Matt Graham in Dual Survival.
I'm not naïve enough to think that these aren't elaborately preplanned shows, well scripted, and of course intended to raise Nielsen ratings (and sell products for the commercial advertisers). But I'm thinking that someone who is a so-called hunter gatherer at least has some respect for the land which a lot of people don't. Sometimes the actor's use of various tree barks and plants provides information of which I previously had no knowledge.
Any thoughts? What's your opinion on these shows - any value at all or just strictly sensational?

Well, I am of the opinion that things aren't completely one way or the other. There always seems to be a kernel of the opposing expression within something.
So value vs purely sensational? I don't watch TV so I have never seen a survival/reality show. But I would guess that there are some nuggets of helpful, useful information within a mostly outrageously sensational venue.

Yeah, to paraphrase desertwoman, there are hundreds of shades of grey. But I do prefer documentaries, with sources clearly mentioned.

Survival shows? Just trash, in my opinion. There's much better stuff to watch.

I agree with Binny! I watched the first show of the first one, Survivor! I quit after that first one. Can't see why so many folks waste their time on those or about 1/2 the other stuff on tv....like the Kardashions (sp?)!
I mostly watch the news and weather and some informative shows....so not much tv for me. But I try to never miss jeopardy! It's fun to try to get the answers and it has gotten easier over the years...I get a lot more of them now!

The folks I actually had the chance to meet, who prised simplicity, charity, and service. Did things like make sure there garden was planted large enough for others to pick some from the back row if they (others) were in need.
Too often there just wasn't much of that shared place and charity in the modern 'survivalist'.
If you can't get on with your neighbor, somethin' is gonna bust in good times or bad.

I can't stand that show if it's the one where the guy is always barefoot. Totally ridiculous.
We do watch Alaska the Last Frontier and mostly enjoy it even though they do have too much about hunting and I fast forward through those parts.

Survival Golf Red? Don't watch much TV in general. A couple cooking and DIY shows. Haven't seen any of the survival shows but did catch a series on National Geographic about disaster "preppers" that I thought was interesting from a sociological perspective.

We don't watch reality/survival shows either. I figure if and when the end comes, survivalists won't even survive.
We find a good movie once in a while, otherwise it's NCIS, news, NASCAR, HGTV and fixer upper shows.

I love those Alaska shows and I'm just itching to vacation/move there. My sister moved to Homer, AK about 6 months ago and totally loves it. Looking at that kind of beauty every day would curb my traveling itch. I would be content. If I had a greenhouse of course.

Inane, mind numbing, drivel, like most of commercial television today.

99.9% of the time, if it's on TV then it's on TV for one reason. To generate money. It's not survival if there's a camera crew and a phone call will get you out of a tight spot. I find some of them entertaining but rarely informative.
Les Stroud is probably pretty close to real. I do like "Life below 0" but it's not really a survival show.
