So I decided to take your advice, ordered some asparagus, and some strawberries... and up pops a grape, so what the heck, I am sure I can put it in the SW corner of the garden and have it go up the horse panel....???
Really I don't know a dang thing about growing a grape vine, total impulse... any advice?

Be sure to look up how & when to prune it! I keep struggling with the varieties that I'm trying to raise. They aren't really suited for my area but I don't care for scuppernong or muscadines (sp?)! I have a white seedless and trying once again with concords. At least the concords are growing this year and yesterday I saw some bloom bunches on both kinds!....now if they make it to ripening!

I grew some grapes 15 years ago and got some really good tasting grapes but the Japanese Beetles LOVED eating the leaves. I'm not sure but I don't think that you have those in SD.
Glad you bought the asparagus. You'll be glad you did.

Not being a grape person I pull out every dang one of them whenever I can. But apparently not well enough. It is amazing how they grow. My neighbor loves them and had asked him if he wanted them but I guess you can't mix(?) varieties as he makes wine out of them.

so you just bury the roots, and hope for the best?
I don't suppose you prune it the first year, I do assume you cut the flowers off the 1st year... any other ideas?

I would google it. I've never cut the flowers off mine and I seem to get a few more each year!
My vines look better this spring than they have for a couple of years....probably due to the colder winter we had!

mrsk grapes need support. You need to build something possibly very durable. Attachment Deleted

You can't just let them cover a fence? I have a sturdy cattle panel.

I think that they will climb on anything that you give them.

I know that grapes need "lean" soil, so if I were you I'd place them where nothing else really grows. Maybe next to a fence is a good spot.

I bought two grapes from Park I think and put them in the ground next to my fenced garden hoping to get them to grow up it like the one in the picture there and go over the top support. Well nothing at all happened. They still look dead as doornails and they have been in the ground a month. How long do I wait before I email Park about it? Are they just slow?
