I rescued a Christmas Cactus from step mom. She got it probably 5 yrs ago as a gift from a family member. She only watered it. The thing never grew much and never bloomed. In almost gone condition. She had it by the door to throw out. Brought it home, got some cactus mix and repotted it (she had never even repotted it from it's nursery pot). The roots were really sad and small. That was 2 months ago. It has perked up in South window. I see 3 little baby shoots showing! I'm sure it won't bloom this year, it's still in recovery mode.

3 Christmas cactus were in living room east window all of December and part of January. They bloomed but nothing spectacular. So a week ago I took them back upstairs to their usual east window. No they are blooming like there's no tomorrow!! Maybe too cool for them downstairs in that big window??

I'm not sure, but I believe they're originally native epiphytes from South America, so that could be balmy/humid or cool/humid - take your pick. Mine seem to do well in either east-facing windows or a couple of feet away from south-facing windows. Sometimes in the summer I'll give them a mini-vacation outside in a shady spot, but you have to uber-careful to not allow them to get hit by direct sunlight. Sunburn city.

Mine are in a room that has a west facing window. They're not close to the window, but that room does warm when the sun hits it. They bloom like crazy at Thanksgiving. They are kind of a bland light pink, almost white. My red one died and just never replaced it.

I was watering the houseplants and noticed 2 buds on one of my Thanksgiving cactus. I guess it's making up for one of the Amaryllis bulbs that didn't bloom this year.

Just found the branch with 4 flower buds laying next to the pot. So bummed. I think it was just to heavy and snapped. Will try to root it, but I know the buds won't open. It was a branch with multiple side branches.

2 reds are loaded with blooms, the white in center isn't far behind. They are not the Easter variety. They started blooming when I moved them from downstairs East window to upstairs East window. Odd.

Dude, you're like a Christmas Cactus hero, swooping in to save the day! Giving that neglected plant a new home and some proper care is totally awesome. Repotting it with fresh cactus mix was a solid move, especially since its roots were looking pretty pathetic. It's great to hear it's perking up in that south window and even sprouting some baby shoots – that's a sign it's feeling the love. Yeah, it might not be ready to throw a flower party just yet, but all good things take time, right? Keep doing what you're doing, give it some gentle water when the soil feels dry, and maybe a little cactus fertilizer if you're feeling fancy. You've already turned its life around, so who knows? It might surprise you with a bloom when it's good and ready. You're on the right track, just keep showing it some love!
