Little acrobats they are. They climb the pole, then hang upside down from the top of the feeder and eat from the tray. Going through tons of seed. Yesterday I went out and put petroleum jelly on the pole. I watched for a few minutes. He came back, ate from the ground then jumped to climb and slid right back down. Watched a while longer, he kept looking up, continued to eat from the ground, then left.
Temporary fix I'm sure. DH said spray with WD40. Nope not doing that.

I put it 3/4 way to the top. I imagine I’ll have to do it again in a week or so.

Here are my squirrel feeders: Squirrel feeders. by pepperhead212, on Flickr I'm surprised that I haven't seen that many of them, given the dryness out there. That's when they usually go to tomatoes for water, and nibble on one, drop it, and go to another!

Our feeder is mounted head high on a round steel pole. The local squirrels have been climbing the pole to get to the feed tray.
We purchased a Slinky from Amazon, removed the feed tray, attached the slinky to the underside of the tray and let the slinky extend down around the pole. The bottom end of the slinky is about 18 inches above the ground.
I just watched a squirrel attempt to climb the pole. He made his jump to the pole and the slinky delivered him downward. I think that was not his first rodeo...I think he’d already been introduced to it.
The slinky cost us four buck with free shipping.

I tried a slinky but the squirrel must have put his paws right between the rungs...saw him on the platform . Mumsey , how much petroleum jelly did you use.... At the moment the dog is my best defense against the critters, rabbits too, but don't know what happens when I am not here. I don't let her out when I am gone.

Bird feeder rodeo aka the red squirrel is hungry.
Yesterday we stood at the window and watched the educated squirrel. He knew what was going to happen if he jumped on the feeder pole. So he did a little pole dancing below the slinky. ..he stops, sits up, keeps his eyes on the food tray. It’s up there and driving him crazy. Then he goes to the galvanized trash can where we store the bird goodies. It’s in there...he can smell the corn, the sunflower seeds, the suet. Up on top of the can he goes, but the lid won’t open. He disappears from our sight and when we see him next, he is under the soffit of our two story garage, sitting on the diagonal of the gutter. I thought he was going to make a jump to the feeder, but that didn’t happen. I didn’t see him today.
Is it possible that we have outsmarted the little bugger?

That didn’t last long. While the red squirrel continues to get his goodies on the area below the feeder, we also have a visiting gray squirrel. This smaller gray fellow is a determined little guy. He was in the spruce tree to check jumping distance. Nope, that won’t work. Then he is on the garage wall...crawling around like Spider-Man. I think he was checking the food supply in the tray. Down the wall, and within seconds, up the slinky pole he went. I hope he doesn’t share his technique with red squirrel.
We may end up buying one of those cone shaped squirrel guards.

may end up buying one of those cone shaped squirrel guards Or you could get the squirrel his own feeder and become a squirrel watcher as well as a bird watcher. Give him old, stale peanut butter sandwiches and he'll be happy.

Anyone use one of those spinning bird feeders where the squirrel jumps onto it and, in the ad pictures, it twirls and twirls flying around til it lets go. I would like to try that.
Generally here there is seed on the ground as well for squirrels and ground feeders.

I greased up the pole with Vaseline but it’s too cold to make it very slippery. So I cut some chicken wire to put on top of the feeder with the pokey ends sticking up. The squirrel gets up there and holds on with his back feet while stretching over upside down to get the seed. I don’t care if they eat from the ground but they get up there and knock it all out of the feeder.
We’ll see what he tries next! Fat little dastards.
