We have particularly violent weather coming today, potentially "large hail". Oh Hail no.
Outside, I have peas that are about an inch or so high, spinach sprouts, and parsley transplants.
Any ideas for protection - that is quick?
I'll pile up with a lot of the leaves that have been pushed aside - anything else?
Also want to cover the bare ground where I am waiting on broccoli, tatsoi, beets, and chard to emerge..... |

I saw some of that weather on TV and it looks awful.
I have about ten 1/2 bushel baskets that I use for that purpose but I mainly use them for seedlings, not rows of plants. How about some cardboard bent in half like a tent and placed over the row? |

5 mil. poly sheeting comes on a roll and is excellent for these purposes and also to cover tomatoes against an early frost. Look at a lumber yard or garden center.
Your leaves should do the job just fine. Have fun!

I use plastic, as well.
It covers a large area very quickly. We often times have a hail storm come upon us with little to no warning and I can get out there and cover things in just a couple of minutes. I anchor with rocks on each corner. Then I pull it off as soon as the storm has passed (or as soon as I can get to it)

Ugh...I used heavy cardboard, bent and held down on edges w bricks. Things got wild , the cardboard got soggy but I lost practically nothing. Good luck.

I piled up about 4-5 inches of leaves over it all...we'll see how it all looks tomorrow  |

I just saw on the news that Chicago is at risk for tornadoes. How scary. Good luck.

I just read that there was some damage west of Chicago....I hope everyone up that way checks in. Also in Iowa!
With hail stones close to the size of tennis balls, not sure how much good a lot of things would protect plants. Tbird was probably smart to use the leaves. |

Tennis balls??!! Yikes. That could knock one of us out, let alone a plant.

Yes, it was a wild night in eastern Iowa and western/northern Illinois last night, several injured and one death. Nothing in my area but a few thunderstorms yesterday. If we ever have hail things will be on their own, especially if I am not home!

Massively devastating line of storms continuing to wreak havoc heading east...
Scary....Heartbreaking...
Prayers for all affected...
I just can't imagine hail the size of grapefruit.
How horrible.

I saw the Illinois tornado news this morning and very sad someone had died and several injured. So glad everything worked out for you folks in the area.

We had some wild cloudbursts but no hail that I know of. The yard looks relatively like it was previous. I was at work, about 6 hours a way. DS report the house was really shaken up by some close lightning strikes. It wasn't that bad downtown.
I think it was 2-3 years ago I lost all my starts in a hail storm. I was 20 feet away, but unable to get them, watching from the porch.
I can't imagine hail so big! I imagine every's car is beat up......
sympathies for those who lost so much.
I'll go after I have some coffee and dig out the leaves.

We had some hail but it was only pea size. Lots of thunder and lightning.

things were a bit bent under....the torrent of rain was pretty intense at the height of it....
But - I think it's all pretty fine.
