It is a Choke Cherry. These things grow wild here. They make very good jelly if you have the patience to pick a bucketful.

Interesting. They certainly do well here at 5000 ft elevation in this high mountain desert.

I found this statement but don't know how true it is: "Lilacs do best in cool-summer climates and up to USDA plant hardiness zone 7. They are not recommended for hot, humid areas, such as Southern U.S. states in zones 8 or 9."
