The Utube thing I saw was a gentleman pulling off those upper branches and eating them raw. But I have not been able to find it again to show you what I mean. Thx for remembering to post this. Do they lose flavor or too tough after some time that you can pick anymore?

No, they taste just as good and are tender but when I see that the emerging spears are starting to be spindly, then I know that it is time to let the roots start getting some energy and I let the ferns start to grow and photosynthesize some food for the roots. June 21 is a guideline for stopping the harvesting but I let the plants tell me themselves and I started letting them grow on about June 10.

I just stopped picking mine. Now they can send up fronds and send some nutrients down into the roots for next Spring's crop.

Seemingly overnight my bed is done..I start to get reed like spears that grow two ft high ...so my harvest is over more or less. I may get a couple more speeds but that's all.

Watch for those Common Asparagus Beetles. They seem to love the fronds. I am hand squishing about 25 - 50 a day!
They are easy to squish because they drop down from the frond when they feel threatened so I cup one palm under them and reach for them with my other hand. They drop right into my palm and that is the end of them.
I would not recommend spraying the fronds even though you are no longer eating the spears because I have seen my honeybees working over those tiny little asparagus flowers. They hang upside down and poke into them. I have also see lots of small wasp looking insects that I can not identify.

I was near the asparagus bed today with camera in hand so I tried to get a pic of a honeybee working on the asparagus flowers. You can see the bright orange pollen on her back legs. I couldn't do a good close up because there was too much movement and it would get out of focus.
