Idk about it either..my row is planted in a full sun spot which I imagine does much to keep fungal stuff at bay anyway.

Do you mulch them during the growing season? What do you do with the straw in the spring?

Most of it breaks down, very little left of it. I weed the area in early spring and then put some straw mulch down..still have to weed occasionally but not too bad.

Finally little tiny spears sticking up, I sprinkled a little more dirt over it. I think I should wait for a few more to pop through!

Asparagus keeps popping up all over my garden from seed (neighbors). After pulling and pulling, I decided to dig up a dozen and made a spot for them. Those root systems are very strong already. So I just dug a hole and put them in.
Right or wrong, we'll see what develops. I don't intend to give it any special attention other than weed control. If it survives it was meant to be, if not, oh well. I am the only one who eats it here. Didn't really want to give up the space for it.

Does anyone have a picture of their asparagus? How tall does the plant get? I was at a nursery today and it was huge. Was that the vegetable? I shoulda asked but no one was around at the time.

The spears come up in the spring and they look like the ones you see at the store, they just taste a lot better. If you let the spears keep growing they will get to be about 3 feet tall and open up and look like ferns.
This is the part of the plant that nourishes the roots to make spears next year. The spears are just ferns that are immature. As long as we keep harvesting the spears we will not see the ferns.

This is how tall it gets when it fronds out. You let it die back and cut it off in January here. I keep it off the ground with a fence. Some people cut it back before it is real dead looking. I let it get real dead looking. Why? Because I read that this stuff still adds to the root system even when it is yellow and ugly. And ever since I read that...............well, it's not hurting anything out there. I haven't seen those asparagus bugs here yet..................thinking about that.

I haven't seen those asparagus bugs here yet If you see spears bent over like a shepherds crook, then the beetles have seen you! I do not see them on the spears all of the time but mostly in the daytime when you are at work. I rarely see any in the evening.

How often and when do you pick asparagus? Do you pick it throughout the season or is it good during a short 2 or 3 weeks?

Asparagus is a perennial and it needs to get established before you can pick it for it's full season of 8 weeks. The first year that you plant the roots, the plants will grow but you don't pick anything. The 2nd year you can pick spears for 7-10 days, the 3rd year you can pick for 4 weeks and all years after that you can pick all of the spears that appear for the full 8 weeks of the season.
My first spears appeared on April 20 this year so I will be picking until June 20. I pick spears every day.
Asparagus roots are planted in the spring so you missed it for this year.

I planted 10, I got 5 up. So do I wait? It said to dig the spot out, and add the soil back as they grow. So now I got little mole hills, out there. Wonder if the rest will come in, or if they are duds.
