You want to plant a "pinch" of seed. Don't try to separate them. They will grow into a clump of seedlings that you keep as a clump.

I was seeding flowers yesterday too!
I did a tray of calendula (which I left outside as it didn't need frost protection - the rest came into the enclosed porch), 3 trays and 2 containers with alyssum, one tray of asters.
I also had 2 garden spots where I sprinkled some cosmos seeds. Those also didn't need frost protection.
As with everything else - I wanted to do so much more! I did buy a pack or two of lobelia recently - but ran out of prepped trays and time, lol!
I did previously do a tray of pinks, which will be perennial for me.
Still want to do up some zinnias, and lobelias.
I have some coneflowers, but might do those direct seeding later. They'll come back next year, so no need to get all early on them.

DW: what I ended up doing is pouring some in my palm, and pouring along a shallow trench... we'll see...

Oh but they are so worth the extra effort to plant!

Mine are usually root bound by the time I plant them. There are so many little plantlets crammed into a cell, because of all those tiny seeds. I score through the roots on all four sides and scratch the bottom (sort of mess up the roots), so that they will root well in the pots or garden soil.

Lobelia is so fine it is just like dust. This is my first year I am trying it. DW, good to know as I would thin them by cutting them down to one or two.

I started with a scant tsp sugar mixed into the pkt and then I was able to thinly plant rows. It was amazing how far they went w the sugar added.

i'll remember that claude, thank you.
Tbird, they are in a pot with 3 other flowers outside the kitchen window: forget-me-nots, shanthus(sp?)poppy from the bulk bins, and the lobelia. I posted a pic at the top of this thread of the flowers. they're in a 6" by 30" pot.
