Once I read years ago, first plan the garden, then mulch the garden, add the trellises and then plant.
I think we might be droughty, so I am really working on laying out the garden and getting the cardboard and mulch down.
This year, I am really trying to keep track of varieties, instead of putting seeds in pots and I will remember.
This year, I am working on having more space for each planting.
What are you doing this year?

I am also making myself do different things beginning with not doing my seeds as early as I have in the past. I did start onions early because I knew I would be trimming them as I went along. And marking them so I know what they are, rather than, 'oh, I'll remember', then don't.
Hardening off will be better as I nearly lost plants last year from sun and wind scald. I saved milk cartons to put on my tomatoes this year to make sure frost doesn't get to them if one comes along.
I am also going to bury some wiring so the rabbits don't invade my backyard....I think I saw them laughing at my attempts to keep them out.
I am trying some new varieties of squashes this year, but that is something I try every year.

mulch is big for me this year. I am always trying to do underplanting, interplanting, living mulch, companion planting. I end up too weedy! So - the biggies - toms, cukes, zukes - going to let them be the main attaction, lots of mulching, and maybe put some pots of things nearby....
I also lose track of what varieties of toms go where. Shoot! another thing I meant to look for at the store today! plant makers! I was at both home depot and the local organic/hydroponic place. <insert mad-at-self emoji here!>

Just Slap me, but I like to KNOW!
Plant markers?
Do you have any mini blinds that need replaced with new ones in your windows? Cut up the old ones and make markers.

Funny, I use the disposable chopsticks for dibbles and row markers. There is 25% mandatory water cutback in effect now so i will definitely be mulching much more. Working on a posting for the CG on this topic.

Recycle those old mini blinds. Cut 'em up, get a sign marking Sharpie (different than just a Sharpie). You find them where you find garage sale signs, etc. It lasts the whole season and thru the winter. You can make one helluva lot of markers from one set of blinds. Pick them up at garage sale cheap!
This year I am fencing off every section of garden (dog in training!). We fenced the whole back yard late last Fall, what a great thing. Have not seen a rabbit near the yard since Princess is now Queen of the property.
I am not doing the community garden this year, too many projects at home. Now a friend has asked if they could have her daughter's wedding in our gardens! Late in summer.
Dad has expanded his gardens, I plan to spend more time there helping him (and fishing of course). I have started his tomato plants, only about 100 of them......he has supplied more lights for the project.
Plus all the house renovating going on, it's never-ending!

What an endeavor...100 tomatoes!! Are ya going have the wedding there?? How exciting but I would imagine very time consuming. Lisaann....I was just thinking about you as I just planted my tomato seeds and I am saying to the self....gotta mark them so I know what they are when I am asked....don't want you to lose any sleep... Heck, I am bad, bad, bad when I don't get my sleep!! (flowers nasturtiums)

I made a new 4'x10' raised bed to expand my dry beans. I spent today starting on the rabbit proof fencing. Support T-poles are in,chicken wire is buried a few inches at an angle, and wrapped around the area. Will start wiring on the wood to finish it off later in the week. And build a gate.
I'm growing tomatillos for the first time and some sweet peppers from Puerto Rico (look like habaneros). Excited about these.
I have a stack of popsicle sticks I got from a crafts store, that I use for markers. And I recycle plastic ones that came with store bought starts and landscape plants. Got a bunch of those.
Mumsey- thanks for the Sharpie hint!! I'll look for the sign making ones. I hate when they fade out by July! Your dad is amazing. I hope I have his energy when I am his age. And what a compliment to you to want to have their wedding in your gardens. That is so special.
