The blackeyed susans haven't done anything yet. Do they take a long time to sprout?

DW, I have Rutgers from LA as well and mine are up too.
My husband's Dad grew Rutgers to sell to the canning companies when hubby was a kid. He remembers eating them out in the field so I am growing them for him to see if they taste like he remembers when he used to pick baskets of them in the field as a summer job.
I also purchased a new Rutgers/Brandywine hybrid called Jersey Boy which I am anxious to try.

I believe Rutger to be determinate, and that is the reason I never grew those tomatoes.
My neighbor, an older gentleman, grew Rutgers all the time, and he remembers eating them off the vine when he was a teen. He lived near canneries and tobacco fields, and I wonder now: did those tomatoes get the Tobacco Mosaic Virus, and this is why they only grew determinate varieties?!?

I thought that they grew determinate ones because they produced more at one time so that they could sell them in bulk. Big trucks would come around and pick up the baskets of tomatoes from the farms. Hubby grew up on what is called a "farmette" which is a small farm and the only thing they grew was tomatoes.

Rutgers was a Hybrid when my uncle was a kid.............He loved them..........Made me try some........
They are considered a determinate, but I must tell you, they produce for me like a indeterminate. They keep their size all summer into Autumn. Just like Big Beef do! Big Beef is the hybrid and the Tomato I GO TO as my best producer for Flavor, and juice.
And OVERALL best tomato here. But I like Rutgers too! They impress me just like Big Beef...........But you can save seeds of Rutgers. Actually, I'm on f4's of Big Beef..........That's another story.........Had to take a break on that breeding.....
Remember those Black eyed susans will probably do better direct seeded and only 70% germination as I told ya when I sent them..But, sprinkle HEAVY in the pot. Need light to germinate.....don't forget.
They are a perennial, so throw all the seed in there. And they breed true. Something will come up.
What am I forgetting to say?

brownrexx - I'm going to have to look for Jersey Boy, a hybrid of two of my favorite best-tasters. We grow several Rutgers for heavy all at once production for canning and freezing, as we like to preserve tomatoes all at once for the most part. The indeterminates are the fresh all-season pleasure . Is the hybrid determinate or indeterminate?

My Steakhouse did not come up but I keep watching. Maybe it's just late. I planted some German Johnson seeds the same day and they just popped up today so I'll keep watching the Steakhouse pot.

If the foilage pictured in Burpee's blurb is that of the Jersey Boy, it's potato-leaved, too. Another plus, in my opinion. Thanks for the link.

How many days has the Steakhouse been in the soil? Mine were up in 4 days. The others took 5, and 6. If they aren't up in 10 days, dang. Lets give them that long.
