Have you seen these guys? We have them burrowing in the ground near our driveway. They are generally harmless to humans unless you step on one or harass it, and fun to watch. Amazing how they fly with an adult cicada. The female has a stinger, male does not. So apparently the female is the hunter.

Have I ever! Three years ago I had an open canned beverage in the garden, left it briefly, and came back for refreshment. I suddenly had a mouthful of...something. Spat it out, and it was a 3" long cicada killer. It was barely alive, and succumbed shortly. I brought it in, and put it on the shelf over my desk. Two months later, I had the very same experience. They sat together on the shelf, stingers (daggers) extended, til just recently.
I learned three lessons: 1. No more open beverages in the garden. 2. Cicada killers like beer. 3. I'm glad I'm not a cicada.
