When shopping for groceries yesterday, I took more time to look around. There’s been single servings available for a lot of years, but yesterday, it seems as if there’s been a new wave of items available in single portions, ready to eat right out of the package.
While it’s a convenience for the shopper, what bothers me is all that packaging and plastic containers. Since recycling is available for most, does that make it more acceptable to purchase single servings? Or, are we just so lazy, we think we need these conveniences?
More and more, we just keep creating a burden for this Earth.

May be part of the everyone in the family runs out to work or school culture. People don't have time to prep and prefer to grab something already prepared. Part of it is also portion controlled snacks, if they know they will take too much otherwise.

Many people with limited use of their arms and hands also benefit by having items like single-serving or peeled fruits and vegetables available.

Wheelgarden, you’re right, and when I made my post I was thinking of all those plastic trays that foods like lunchables are packaged in, all those yogurt containers, and on and on. Thanks for presenting a different way of looking at the situation and pointing out how they do make life easier for folks.

binnylou I knew what you were getting at, and agree. Today's over-packaging and over-plastic-ing really is overwhelming.

binnylou, gardendmpls, Wheelgarden, Maybe in time all those containers/packages will be made with biodegradable materials like corn starch, bamboo. Those things are out there. In the past I have gotten milk in those corn-based degradable jugs that break down in 3 months. Looks like regular plastic. If people are willing to spend the extra $$ on single serve, I would think the environmentally friendly cost of packaging wouldn't stop them from buying.
