DE should do the trick. You can make a spray with a bit of oil and spray the plants and then sprinkle it around the plants. does a good job. When wet has no impact but when it dries it has the same sharp edges. Recipe: 4 tbls of DE to one gal. water and 2 tsp. of veggie oil(allows for sticking). It can also be combined with other sprays.

Will they cross if flowering together? Probably they will cross pollinate but since I am not saving the seeds, it won't matter. Most crosses do not affect the taste of the veggie. Corn is one exception.
