one of my friends had a spear a week ago. ONE spear, he just had to show it to me! hehe. I made sure to tell him, don't eat that! you need it to grow and make a plant! He also didn't know it was a fern that gets 3 - 5' tall, is gray green, etc.

I saw two short spears when I was spreading straw on my asparagus patch. At least 10 days earlier than last year.

Got me Karen, thing now is to see if they survive. This plant is only about 18"-2' high and covered in blooms. A first for me.

It is my Homestead plants that are blooming here! But 2 yrs. ago I had tomatoes set on by this time....I planted them in Feb. that year.
And my friend down in Fl. just said today that the San Marzano will even survive her heat down there all summer and produce!

Yea.... I can finally post on this thread. I have been looking for asparagus shoots every day and seeing nothing. Last year my first shoot was on April 17 (yesterday) so I was expecting to see something pretty soon. Well today I looked all over the bed and again - I saw nothing. As I turned away (dejectedly) to start walking back to the house I saw a 2" spear!!!!
It was purple so I had not seen it right away but it's an actual spear so the rest of the plants can't be too far behind.
Maybe we'll be eating asparagus next week!

Picked enough today to have a nice side dish to go with some baked fish. About a week earlier than last year.

BR, you had better still check it daily...you may be eating it yet this weekend! No such luck. That spear grew about another 2 inches and I can just see the head of another one. Rain is due for the next day and a half so maybe more will start popping up.
