I did it. After drooling through DA rose catalogs and researching the internet for three years, I finally placed an order. I had a promo code good for 15% off and I didn’t want to lose that. I ordered three roses. Queen of Sweden, in memory of my grandmother...The Ancient Mariner, in honor of our son-in-law’s new assignment as commander...and Benjamin Britten, just because I liked the color.
i hope they do well for me. And now I can scratch this off of my bucket list.

Good for you! The Austin roses are so beautiful that they're worth every penny.
And thanks for enabling me to buy some as well!

Yay for you binnylou,! And you too SpringRain, -I want to hear which one(s) you ordered! I have a DA Sally Holmes which was here when I moved in(and one of the very few things that was already planted) I also have 2 Westerland climbers that I am training to grow up, around and above a large window And I was gifted a red rose that I do not know the name of. I'm going to buy another rose this spring. I love growing roses. My mom did too. And I always think of her when I am cutting roses from my garden

desertwoman, binnylou, thank you both for the reminder. I had completely forgotten about that offer and the deadline just around the corner. I think I might miss it though. The next 2 days I'll be at my father's house with contractors; I've started the spring cleanup, which is going to be quite a chore. And I forgot to order an Austin catalogue! I have a vague recollection though that in past years he's had a second stage offer for the roses that haven't yet been sold. But if we close early on Friday, as I'm hoping, I might still have a chance to check the online catalogue. I've also been thinking about ordering some ramblers from one of the other rose companies. Mom had a whole fence about 100' long just covered with ramblers, but it doesn't appear as if any are left. I loved those ramblers; and they still remind me of her gardening talents.

I received notification that my David Austin roses should arrive mid week. I have one spot all prepped and ready to be planted and two more to go. One will be by the garden shed and the other will be beside our front walkway. That one will be a tough one to prep.
Life would be so much easier if I were addicted to jigsaw puzzles.

Roses arrived today. They have wonderful root systems, and are now lounging in their own bucket of water in the garage.

I used to grow roses many moons ago. It seemed they required a lot of care and they always got the powdery mildew. Love them, but have opted for more carefree plants. binnylou, Can't wait to see pics!

My rose bushes don't look good. There are a few branches that have new growth and more that don't. They had an early leaf bud in March and then we got a string of nights in the low 20's, which killed the buds. Do you think they will revive and put out more new leaf growth? Most of the bush looks dead right now (along with those few sprigs of growth). I don't want to prune them until I know what is really dead. I guess I will wait to see what finally does leaf out and the prune out what may be dead? This is my David Austin 'Sally Holmes'

Does your rain barrel overflow there? Is the rain barrel new to that spot? Your area received more moisture than what is normal. Could that be the problem? The DA catalog defines your rose for zone 6 to 9. Did you have temps that were colder than zone 6?

binnylou , The rain barrel has been there 10 years-and always overflows, even with minimal precipitation so no changes on that front. And we have had several years when winter temps fell way below normal ( getting into minus single digits and one year it got down to minus 20's for 3 nights). This winter was colder than usual, and certainly colder than last year which was unusually warm, but not record cold. And my 4 other roses look like this too. I'm suspecting it's because they started to leaf out early (in March) during a warm spell and then we had really cold temps again (nights in the low 20's). On all of them, there is now new growth coming from the base and some of the branches are now putting out some new leaf buds so I went ahead and pruned them all. I stopped short of a severe prune (can always cut out more) but they got cut back quite a bit.

desertwoman, I noticed that my climbers aren't looking healthy at all. There's a lot of dieback, and I'm not sure why. But they are directly in the path of the prevailing Westerly winds. I think I'd better take some cuttings, just in case the bushes don't survive.

SpringRain,I ended up cutting them way back (my other roses, too) maybe 3 weeks ago and they are now sending up new canes and bushing out. I took a chance with the heavy prune and it paid off.
