The deer count was seven late yesterday…right at sunset. This evening the count was four…a doe and three youngins. I know there was a doe with twins, and if this is that same doe, I’m wondering where she picked up the third youngin.
While the doe was busy licking our limestone wall, the kids were having fun chasing each other running in big circles like puppies frolicking. I’ve seen this before, but it still surprises me when I catch them in the act.

We’re five days +/- until full moon, but the snow on the ground makes it really bright out there. As I was admiring the brightness on the snow, I realized that deer were lying under the maple tree…4 on the ground and 4 grazing/ digging in the snow, looking for food. Hubby has noticed them out there before during the night.
They’ve been visiting regularly, cleaning up under the bird feeder. Today we had 17 turkeys and 6 deer, all grazing in the same area, at the same time. I looked out just in time to see a Tom turkey challenge a young deer. Wing flapping didn’t bother the deer.

Deer count on the yard this afternoon…19. About half of them were last years crop of younguns. They were really feeling their oats…running, chasing each other around the cranberry bush, kicking up their heels. I watched one leave the yard by way of huge leaps and bounds. Must have been practicing escape technique.

Early this morning, I saw two fawns and a doe down by the veggie garden. The fawns were doing the zooming around/playing like puppies thing. Then the mom got involved and she too was playing. I went downstairs where the view is a bit better. By this time, another doe and 3 more fawns had showed up. A third adult/buck? was checking out the watermelon remains in the compost pile.
One of the fawns was really interested in something in the garden…on the other side of the electric fence. I kept expecting him to stick his head in and get a shock. I didn’t see that happen, but within seconds, he was inside the fencing. Back upstairs, I went out on the deck and told the doe to keep her rugrats out of my garden. Ears went up, white flag went up, and they all headed for deep cover. I don’t know how the fawn in the garden executed his escape, but no damage was done to the fencing.
I’d best treat my flower garden tonight.

Seventeen deer on the yard at dusk yesterday. All does and yearlings.
I’d best get out next week and spray the anti deer/rabbit spray.
