We have been visited daily by a group of 7...does and 2 younguns. Today we had two bucks on the yard along with the group. Those two younguns are so furry.
They are getting entirely too comfortable. We have limestone rocks forming somewhat of a wall and I saw them licking the rocks. In years past, we have put out a mineral block, hoping to draw them away from the yard. We didn't do that this year, but thinking maybe we should buy one next time we go to town. It needs to be out back, as far from the yard as possible.

Yes, if they get comfortable they will be around all year!

Just think of the ease in getting fresh venison!

Yes, if they get comfortable they will be around all year! We had 13 or 14 get comfortable a few years ago. When they moved on, Neighbor Dave said they had moved to a food plot a few miles away. meandtk, not a fan of venison. It's still Bambi to me.

Yup. And what do they eat? GMO crops.

binnylou, It isn’t Bambi to me, but it is nauseating for some reason. I seldom touch it.

binnylou, I think I'd get the mineral blocks for the deer. It might be that whatever their natural sources for nutrients are frozen over, or unavailable.

The mineral block is on my shopping list...hubby says he can get to the designated area with the tractor. If he waits a few days, the snow may be gone and getting there won't be an issue.

I have seven to a dozen customers every morning. I feed them alfalfa and corn twice a day. If some bucks show up I could have as many as 20. I usually will shoot one or two during hunting season but this year they all got a pass. This is why I have to put a high fence around all the garden areas. I quit buying the deer blocks cause it attracted wild hogs and they would eat the whole thing in a night.

We bought the mineral block and hubby even spent the ten bucks for a plastic pan for it. The pan will keep the block off the ground and accumulating moisture will drain away. I predict the deer will eat the plastic. They have been missing for a few days. Since the snow melted, they can find food more easily, or they have moved on.

A group of 9 visited the yard this afternoon. They stayed for a while, then headed down the road toward Neighbor Dave’s. He has been putting corn at the edge of the road to help the pheasants and turkeys weather this cold and snow. Hubby said the turkeys found the corn this morning...8 of them. When the deer headed down the road, they scared up the fox that was hiding in the brush. He’s a big fellow...might get mistaken for a coyote. I first saw him in late summer. Their bark is kinda scary, until you know what it is. The first time I heard it...many years ago...I was afraid to go outside at night. And we had an outhouse.

binnylou, your description of the animal visitors to your area makes it sound like a wonderful rural and peaceful place to live, with a lot of interaction with wildlife. It's sounds so bucolic and peaceful. No speeding cars roaring up and down the street.

For the first time in years I saw a huge bouquet of pheasants the other day in a field on the way to Dad's. Must have been 30 of them, pecking away looking for food. Numbers were down for a few years, nice to see so many at once.
And I now have evidence that rabbits come right up to the back door during the night! I haven't shoveled the deck off from the blizzard and their little foot prints are everywhere! Princess took off like a shot when I let her out this morning, probably smelled one nearby. Either that or she had to pee really bad.
