And when you pass one of those flat ones in the road, your car stinks inside for a few miles. The other day I passed two flat skunks, the first one stunk up the car but the second one I saw in time and switched the vents to recirculate so the smell didn't come into the car. Seems like skunks all cross the roads on the same nights because usually when I see one, I see many.

binnylou Which version did you listen to? The first time I heard it was probably the original (Wainwright?), but years later I heard the Ray Stevens version, and after that, Jimmy C Newman's cajun version, which is my favorite, and probably the one I've listened to the most.

The first one that came up was Wainwright, and it sounded right. It was complete with pictures…of dead skunks in the middle of the road.

Made me think of Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt-o2xlffWoThere is another video with actual pictures of dead skunks in the road. Wouldn't watch it at lunchtime.

I was going to say that this was not the one with the good pictures - several dead skunks, plus a clothespin on the nose! I like the one where a road line was painted right over the skunk! Slightly different version, by the same artist. m.youtube.com/watch?v=Uu5hzc2Mei4

Didn't post the one with the pictures, which also included a road killed cat. Didn't want to stress anyone with a sensitive nature. Besides, I like skunks.

I have seen a lot of flat ones lately which is how you know it is breeding season. One has been in the yard now and again. Also we saw one when we were walking the dogs in the woods beside the road. They do steal eggs but only what they can reach. My friend's husband had poor eyesight. He used to sit on the screen porch and feed his cats. One day my friend noticed that one of the "cats" was a skunk! It never sprayed anything though.

One day my friend noticed that one of the "cats" was a skunk! It never sprayed anything though. They're actually pretty mild-mannered animals unless they're ill or feel threatened. I actually had a young descented one as a pet for awhile, back in my misspent youth. They were somewhat popular back then before ferrets arrived on the scene.

I've told this story before. When we lived in the country, I was going out the door at 1:30 pm to go to work and there was a skunk right there!!! DH went out another door to get it away. It acted drunk so assumed it was sick. He disposed of it. Luckily the dogs were not out.

It acted drunk so assumed it was sick. Yes - you definitely do not want to be around a skunk (or any wild animal, for that matter) that's behaving strangely - especially one that's purposely trying to approach you. That doesn't automatically include animals seen out during daylight hours, as we've seen both skunks & raccoons out during the day - especially in Springtime - that were perfectly fine. I think once the warm weather hits they're just more likely to be out & about searching for food after the winter.

This thread brought back a memory of my beloved grandpa. There was striped skunk milling about the garden and Pops says to me "Bud, go git your grandma's wash tub quick. Gonna teach how to catch a polecat." So I did and Pops now says "Sneak up behind him and don't let him see ya. When you git close enough turn the tub over on top of him." So I did and Pops then says "Well Bud, now you got something to sit on while you think about your next move."
