The 11-year-old pup starts barking, and runs to investigate...moments later, she runs back to be let inside...open the door, and the cringing, acrid smell of skunk hangs heavy in the air. Fortunately, she didn't get sprayed, and is spared banishment and a tomato juice bath.

Although they're mostly dormant at this time of year, there's always a January skunk who meets its unfortunate end on the roads nearby. Le odeur! Le Pew!

I am a beekeeper. The darned skunks would come scratch on the hive until the bees came out to fight, then sit there and eat bees. I don't want to shoot a skunk on the place cause when they die they let loose all that stinky stuff and you can't go near the place for ten days. So, I would take a trap and hook it to a ten foot 2x4. I would lead the critter over to the canal and drown it. The odor goes with the water. So, now you see what a mean ornery old man I am?

Tom: "Skunks are rare here, but I keep cage traps set. Watched two videos on how to safely release a trapped skunk."
Tom do the skunks bother anything you have on the place? I know they are hell on beehives. Never noticed them to be much bother with anything else.
Release a trapped skunk. First, drop the cage in the pond. About 30 minutes later go pull it out, remove dead critter and toss it in the garbage can. Reset the trap.
"safely release a trapped skunk." If you are going to trap skunks for heavens sake kill the varmint! Otherwise why bother trapping? Arguah!

Tom do the skunks bother anything you have on the place? I know they are hell on beehives. Bears are the danger to bee hives here if the hives are away from the house and near the woods. A beekeeper once offer me his hives and equipment, and we would go halves on the honey. Bears were tearing up his hives. I turned him down because I would have had the same problem.

I didn't mind having skunks around until I got the dog. Skunks are great for digging up grubs, mice and other critters and they will dig under a fence to visit you.

I love having skunks around, & would NEVER kill one. Geesh. They are terrific at digging out & destroying Yellow Jacket wasp nests. Natural pest control.
Around here all of the bee keepers (& we have a LOT of them) use electric fencing around their hives to keep both skunks & bears at bay. No need to kill anything.

Usually a dog will only get sprayed once, then they know better.

We have a visiting skunk on the yard…two days in a row. Does that make him a resident skunk instead of a visiting skunk? Inquiring minds…

This is the mating/breeding season for skunks, so you'll start to see more of them out & about. Males out mate-hunting & already-bred females looking for a good spot to den up & have their kits (which are adorable). So long as our dogs didn't meet up closely with them (which happened a couple of times), I don't have a problem with them being around, as they are unbelievably terrific at digging up & consuming grubs & Yellowjacket wasp larvae - Yellowjacket wasp larvae/nests being their favorite. If we have a Yellowjacket wasp nest close to the house & can wait a bit, one of our resident skunks will take care of it for us. In the 26 years we've lived here there has only been one time out of many where we had to resort to a pesticide spray. Skunks took care of the rest.
