binnylou,I have a weighted blanket. I like it a lot. Problem is that it absorbs a lot of body heat, so I have to eventually kick it off in the middle of the night. It is a nice feeling to fall asleep to though.

We have our dog Gunner who sleeps in bed with us. He's quite warm but also quite heavy. Once he drops his 83 lbs. on whatever spot he chooses, nothing is going to move afterward. If you don't have enough comforter or sheet to pull over your shoulders, well you're not getting any more unless you head out to the kitchen, rustle the treat bin, give him one and hope you get back to the bed and settled before he does. We have a flannel/ fleece sheet, a down comforter and the top layer is another sheet to keep everything clean from muddy/wet paws.
We keep the house at 65° while we're awake and 59° for sleeping. We have to raise it to 70° when people come over because they sit with their coats on if we don't. I am so glad I live with someone who likes the same temp as I do.

Dogs and cats do not come in the house. They are outside critters. They have their own house over by the chicken coop. The house is for people. Sheesh!

James, Perhaps you should have a critter in the house to keep you company. They never argue, love to listen to you talk, and will love you unconditionally! They don't have to sleep in bed with you, ours does not. Her comfy bed is on the floor next to ours.

Dogs and cats do not come in the house. James do you have to pick up your own bread crumbs after baking? My kitchen floor stays much cleaner with a dog in the house.

martywny, The floor gets swept once a day, whether it needs it or not.
At present I have no dog. I have kept dogs in the past. Ya, I know about dogs. They were never house dogs. Always had their own house out there by the chicken coop.
There are three cats hanging out here. They can come in the garage and outbuildings, but are not allowed in the house. The house is for people!

Garlic is robust in the cold and waving at me in the garden. The other beds are mulched, full of earthworms, and groaning for planting. The compost is ready and willing. The coyotes are chorusing at night. My fresh seeds for the spring are trying to stare me down. The pup is restless. We're all delirious here for Spring at the old homestead, and it's a-ways off.

"James, Perhaps you should have a critter in the house to keep you company. "
That is why I have a wife...........
Like I said: The cats are outside critters. They do not come in the house! It is good to have a cat around to hold down the rodent population. Three cats hang out here. These cats have the run of the place. They come and go at their pleasure. They do come in the garage at night where it is a bit warmer than the other outbuildings.

James, My Dad is the same, critters live outside. But they do have shelter in the garage as well as a doghouse with blankets. Those kittens sure have grown and actually look fat! Growing up, we had a dog and he lived outside. When we lived in the country we had a dog raised from a pup, after a while he refused to come in the house. I guess he loved outdoor living. There was a doggie door in the old garage where he slept.

The dog we had growing up never came in the house. She had a dog house on an enclosed unheated back porch. I can't imagine my dog now not being in the house. He's too spoiled to be cold.

This morning there is feathers all over the rug by the back door. I guess a cat caught a bird?
I took some seed to the bird feeder. Coming to the feeder: Junco, E. Sparrow, Eu Dove, Magpie, RW Blackbird, Starling.

We're expecting another, and more intense, batch of cold weather next week. I'm planning on a homebound retreat, getting all my run-around needs taken care of so I can hunker down and enjoy being snow, or, more accurately, wind chill bound. One of the pleasant projects is cleaning out the cooking bookcase and packing up old or never used cookbooks for their new home at the Salvation Army.
I vaguely recall a post from the old forum that some old cookbooks might be worth something, so I might check out a few of the good ones. Otherwise, I have several boxes waiting to be filled with books and cooking magazines.
There's gallon and a half of cider for periodic breaks, lots of gardening magazines, including The English Garden, one of my favorites for daydreaming. While I'm not looking forward to several nights of subzero wind chills, I am looking forward to indulging in reorganization.
