Mumsey...what did you think of using worm castings last year? I see that Mtown Menards has 4 lb bags of organic for under four bucks, plus there is a rebate. While I'm not going to make a special trip to buy some, I'd like to try them if I found them for the right price.
I'd just have to tell hubby that it's "special" fertilizer.

Worked great. I did get one in Waterloo yesterday. Will check cedar falls later in the week. I like to put some in wintered over pots with compost, re-use last years potting soil this way.

Mumsey, info please on making worm tea…castings/water ratio? Anybody with knowledge about this, please chime in. I found some at Walmart at a price I was willing to pay.

binnylou. About 1:3 ratio, castings to water. But I do 1:4 with seedlings. Use in 48 hours. I only let it sit 2-3 hrs before using.

Mumsey, why the 48 hour limitation? Does it get stinky? Lose its effectiveness? If capped, it doesn’t become explosive, does it?

binnylou something I read a long time ago. Loses effectiveness, not sure though.

My plan was to incorporate some worm castings in to the seed starting mix for onions. Oops…I forgot. Onions are up and growing. Is there any reason that I shouldn’t sprinkle some worm castings over the soil and water it in? Will the worm castings burn the onion seedlings? Would castings tea be a better plan?

Our favorite garden center had a bag of the Black Gold compost and worm casting mix on sale a couple of weeks ago, so got that to use as an amendment and booster in some of the beds. It's not supposed to really add much as a fertilizer but just a soil improvement I think. Tried some a couple of years ago because we have packed clay soil here and it did seem to help with the tilth of the soil.

During our trip to Costco Sunday I unexpectedly found organic worm castings in 10lb bags, I’ll be mixing with my seed starting soil. Hoping for good results.
