Are birds attracted to flowers colored like themselves? This morning there was a pair of red birds on pink-red persicaria. I occasionally see a flock of gold finches on the sunflowers. I have never noticed red birds on the sunflowers or gold finches on the persicaria.

Interesting question! I've never really noticed. Will pay attention.

In my experience, the color of birds and of flowers doesn't relate to one another. Indigo buntings are a deep rich blue and are just as fond of sunflower seeds and dandelion seeds as goldfinches. Redwing blackbirds hang out in frequently in cattails, which have a nondescript flower. Interesting question though!

Redwing blackbirds hang out in frequently in cattails, which have a nondescript flower. The female and young indigo buntings are brown with buff wingbars, not unlike the centers of some sunflowers, and goldfinches correspond to dandelion flowers. The cattail, depending on age and weather, can be quite dark. Don't the blackbirds have the red spots on their wing trimmed in white like cattail fluff?
