I made the thoughtless mistake of killing the caterpillars on my dill last year which were that of swallowtails. I know better this time around! The varietal I put in and I saw reemerge last week is the Long Island Monmouth variety which I wouldn't recommend personally... it does get big but has more stem per leaf.

I only grew that Long Island Monmoth long ago, but found out that must be more for growing seeds. My favorite dills are dukat and tetra - both of which seem to grow a lot more "fern", before flowering. The tetra grew actually too much indoors, in my hydroponics! (I think I posted that before). It was almost uncontrollable, with roots that busted open the basket, and the stems I couldn't harvest fast enough. Should be good in the ground, however. And I have a bunch of volunteers out there now, in my brassica bed.

We use dill by the handful, and we've got Dukat, Bouquet, and Mammoth going on. We prefer fresh-leaf, but it loses flavor and "zing" when dried. So we go with Mammoth for seeds to store for the off-season. They are all lush right now. Now if I can only get them to reliably re-seed, dog-gone it. [scratches head, puzzled]

I have only grown Mammoth and not sure how happy I am with it as it seems to have way too much stalk per leaf although the stalks do have a lot of flavor but too tough for most applications.

Look into the "fernleaf" varieties of dill. Lots of very "fluffy" leaf, fairly thin tender stalks, & slow-bolting.

breezygardener, ok Breezy, maybe I will take the plunge and start another sort of dill this season, as I am a dill lover. Actually, might make some spätzle tonight with sauteed mushrooms and finished with sour cream and some... fresh dill!

ok Breezy, maybe I will take the plunge and start another sort of dill this season Now's the time. Pretty much all the seed companies are having end-of-season sales, which will only get better & better in the next couple of months since they want to get rid of their 2023 stock before their 2024 catalogs come out.

breezygardener, the real challenge is finding a single site which sells seeds of the herbs I want to buy- I always get killed on the shipping!

I freeze dill all the time. Keeps its 'freshness' very well. Same with parsley.

I always get killed on the shipping! Free shipping should be popping up soon as well on some sites. The companies will start waving as many carrots on sticks as possible to lure buyers in.

I freeze dill all the time. So do I!! While it obviously doesn't defrost in a manner that makes it suitable for garnish, it works just fine in all other applications - cooked dishes, dips, sauces, etc., etc.

I am floored to see my dill chomped off at the top. It would suggest deer but I have been here 12 years and never seen deer anywhere near here in addition to the many fences one would have to jump to get to mine. The closest cluster of trees is about 1/2 mile away which I believe is not too far. Some of my kale is chomped at the top too. I do have lots of rabbits though but the readings I have seen says dill is safe from rabbits.
