My dill reseeded for a couple of years, but I had none this past season. It had found a home at the base of one of the raised beds. Perhaps I'll scatter seed in the same place next spring. If I do it now, it will be mouse food?

I just found out that dill seed is viable for a long time (though I don't know about in the cold, outside, and how cold it can take). I put some old seed in a pot, adding a generous amount, figuring that not much would come up. Well, I think that every seed germinated, and I was wondering if every seed has two, like cilantro! Better all, than none at all, I guess.

I'm having some success with dill lately, but it's never enough. I guess the answer is to plant more (duh). Plucked a single flowerhead a few days ago, put it on my desk. The whole room smells like dill (aaah!).

Dill always self seeds here. And it’s everywhere. If the seed heads form early enough they will drop seed and grow a second crop.

Mumsey growing dill has always been one of my gardening frustrations. Tried for years with no success until lately a bit, while others are overrun with it. We use dill all the time, and it's aggravating, dag-nabbit.

Would you recommend planting dill in its own bed, or interplanting it with other crops? An insistent discussion is going on between me and DS. I favor a dedicated bed, he thinks it could be interplanted amongst things.

I favor a dedicated bed, he thinks it could be interplanted amongst things. Honestly? Either/or or both. I've found it does well either way so long as its needs are met. The advantage to having it in a dedicated bed is being more easily able to monitor its progress (towards blooming/seeding, etc.) & harvesting. But I've also grown it amongst tomatoes & cucumbers & other herbs, & it's also done fine. You just want to keep it away from fennel if you plan to save/use seeds, because they can cross.

Haven't grown dill in years, but when I did I started with a dedicated section of the garden. Then it started to reseed and had a mind of it's own where it would grow so I went with that. I found dill in places that added interest to the garden and they thrived with little from me.

I never plant it in a bed of its own - only things I do that with are mint (actually a bed of its own, surrounded by concrete, to stop runners), and garlic chives, which constantly re-seeds itself, plus the clusters are perennials (I put them behind my shed, and behind the composter). Dill does re-seed, but it's an annual - I don't mind the dill popping up as weeds! I plant some up on my deck, in one of the windowsill boxes, so I can get it when I need some, like the basil and parsley, but there's more out there for larger amounts, when needed. And the swallowtail caterpillars seem to like dill more than parsley!

I haven't planted dill in years, it keeps coming back wherever it wants to! When it dries and drops more seed I even get a Fall bunch, they never get as big but perfect for harvesting dill weed.

Same here. In fact, it kind of takes over. Last year I decided to pull a lot of it out before it got big. Last year I also picked off the seed heads to keep down the reseeding. Now watch, I won't have any this year.

Something I forgot to mention before, though I know I've posted it on other threads - a variety of dill that I got in fall of '21 - Tetra - which I got from Botanical Interests. I first tried it in my hydroponics, and it grew like it was on steroids! It grew well outside last year, and much like Dukat - my favorite to grow for the greens - takes quite a while to start going to seed. And when in the hydro, it took 11 days to grow back into the lights, after trimming them down to stumps! Most other dill varieties I've grown have been early bolters, like cilantro.
