A pair of doves were here cleaning up the seed on the ground. I'm hearing more bird songs lately too!

Also, you need to stop hiding those bodies in the compost. Can't a guy just go out and buy himself an excavator without someone starting rumors?

Well you were the one who brought up the vultures.

Counted at least 24 robins picking in the field yesterday. Spring is near!

We had a herd of robins on the south lawn yesterday. They appeared to be finding something.
Our most recent full moon was the “worm moon”. Must be a reason for that name.

The worms sure are on the move. Robins, Thrashers, and others are very busy on the ground and staking out the compost mound. The Worm Moon is aptly named.

Yesterday hubby brought my big flower urn to its summer home, by way of a hand truck. This is between our front door and driveway. The hand truck stayed in place overnight. This morning, a large barred owl was sitting on the handle of the hand truck. He was obviously hunting…he spotted something on the ground and took his morsel to the Oak tree. Then back to the ground again, but behind a tree this time. Then he left.
Love hearing and watching them.

Saw some bird I’ve never seen before. Small and similar coloring to Junco. But a spot of red on its head. There were 3 of them. Any idea what they are?

Looked in my Kaufman field guide and found some possibilities. Ruby crowned kinglet looks closest to your description. House finch similar but is more brown than grey. Common redpoll might also be it.

gardendmpls , Thanks! There is no definite coloring other than that red spot on the head. It's not a tuft, just a flat red spot. The rest of the bird is a dark solid color with slightly lighter gray on the underside, which made me think of Junco. The closest is the Ruby Crowned Kinglet. I'll check Dad's bird book next time I go there. Wish I could have gotten a pic, but saw it from upstairs window.

gardendmpls, That first one is pretty much like the one I saw. They must be passing through! The second one is cute!

As I was going out the patio door this morning, there was an owl that swooped down from a tree and landed on the concrete bird bath. He/she sat and drank for about 10 minutes, then moved to the pine tree. What a treat!! Haven’t seen a chipmunk in ages

Two neighbors have owl boxes in their yards. I suspect that's why there have been fewer gophers the past couple years. I just saw the first male oriole. Pretty bright yellow bird. I'd seen the more slender, tannish females recently, but while pretty, they are not as striking as the males.
