I miss watching grackles strutting around. Haven't seen them here in New York. Just crows and redwinged black birds. In Texas we had Boat-tailed grackles.

Three Eastern bluebirds at the water bowl this morning.

Every year, we watch the flocks of majestic Sandhill Cranes fly far, far overhead toward their January gathering at the Hiwassee wildlife refuge, north of us in Tennessee. And in somebody's idea of infinite wisdom, TN allows hunters to come and take their limit of them. Ticks me off to no end.

Three bluebirds were at the water bowl just minutes ago. The next visitor was a sparrow/finch type bird…stopped for a drink, then jumped in for a bath. Current temperature is 9*…feels like -6*.

Evidently so, they've been described as "the Filet Mignon of the skies" by the folks who evidently think that they have to kill the majestic birds because there's nothing else to eat. Or something. Aaargh.

gardendmpls ,I had the same question so I Googled them. Apparently so, "The Ribeye of the Skies". They have been brought back from the edge of extinction only to proliferate. They are now endangering farm fields crops due to loss of habitat. Sooo, off with their heads! Sadly, another dumb people trick.

Yep, there's that phrase again. Wildlife has got to have somewhere to go, or die. Aaargh, again.

There was a different bird at the feeder just minutes ago. With binoculars, I confirmed that it was a Red-winged Blackbird.
Previous first siting dates are :
3/16/2017 3/1/2018 3/14/2019 3/25/2020 3/13/2021
Might this be an indication of an early Spring? Or cr@ppy weather to the south.

The traffic at the water bowl is almost nonstop this morning. Mostly Cardinals, a few sparrows, and a Red Bellied woodpecker. With nasty weather on the horizon, I’d think they would be feeding. Hubby put out food and a new suet cake late yesterday afternoon so the birdies would have food to help them through the storm.
Yesterday, a female cardinal was at the water bowl…then she was in the water bowl having a scrub. A male Cardinal came in and landed on the rim, hopped around the rim as if he was trying to find just the perfect spot to get a drink. When he got close to her, they exchanged beak kisses and then he left. I wonder if they are a bonded pair.

I saw the first pair of mourning doves yesterday, out there pecking around in the garden. First of the usual "springtime" birds I've seen, though I've been seeing sparrows all winter, on and off.

Saw a flock of birds playing limb bouncing in the neighbor's tree. Got out the binoculars and saw the flash of red that means the redwinged blackbirds are back in town.

Today was large bird day at the house, couldn't believe we had that many and I could not figure out what the vultures were after. One very large eagle flew across the yard. Two hawks, very large, in a tree at the back of the property waiting for dinner to venture out of the brush. Four very large turkey vultures perched in a tree up front. Six large crows flying around raising hell.
Seven pipers piping.

Four very large turkey vultures perched in a tree up front. If it was a cloudy day or a storm was coming, they may have decided to "come home to roost" early. If it was sunny, they may have decided to sunbathe to sanitize their feathers. Also, you need to stop hiding those bodies in the compost.
