I noticed the new wren house I put up 3 days ago has real estate shoppers already! Watched them while sitting on the deck yesterday.

The young Maple tree outside the kitchen window is getting a new nest this morning. I noticed a bird repeatedly visiting the upper part of the tree. Sure enough, a Robin is well on her way to a new nest.

Sunflowers in bloom, so the goldfinches are back! They seem to really like the tall "Chocolate Cherry" variety. Mister and Missus have been at them all day.

Hubby was checking the garden rain gauge several days ago, and noticed a shadow move across the yard. The source of the shadow was a Barred Owl and it stopped for refreshments at the birdbath. Hubby said it stayed about four minutes and must have been really thirsty. No bathing…just drinking.
Today, I gave the birdbath a good scrub using a battery powered rotary brush, soap, and garden hose. It was really scuzzy. Gave it a good rinse, I hope.

The sparrows are spending alot of time on the ground cleaning up what birds drop from the sunflower heads on the stalks. They are looking pretty tired and may have to come down soon.

"Whirrff! Whirrff!"... the sounds of the hummingbird swarms as they buzz around me. Sounds like the light sabers in "Star Wars". They're getting all nectared-up for the fall. "Whirrff!"

It’s been ages since we’ve seen a robin our neighborhood. They disappeared midsummer. But, this morning, there’s a small herd of them on the south yard. I suppose they are coming from up north…I understand some areas have received snow. If I were a robin, I’d be packin’ my bags too.

A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers have taken their usual roost in the woods next to the house. Those birds have a pterodactyl look to them.

Saw some blue jays today. They usually pass through this time of year, yelling at each other and at other birds. Saw one putting something in the neighbor's roof gutter. Loud and mischievous.

We've had a lot of robins around lately. Funny to see them in the fall but I think I heard that some of them migrate and some of the rest stay behind. They love the birdbath, they line up to drink and a few hop in and take a bath. Haven't heard much about the bird flu so hope that one is done. We have chickadees and house finches that are around all year too.

A huge flock of Robins visited and feasted on the dogwood berries...Blue Jays abound, too.

"Big birds flying across the skies..." The sky and trees were shared and circled today by Cooper and Red-tailed hawks, plus a couple of Black buzzards. Smaller birds took roost to wait it all out. Air-traffic control was busy.

I put a small feeder and a suet feeder in view of kiddo's bedroom window Wednesday morning and by evening the birds had discovered it. Noticed last evening that the feeder was almost empty and also noticed deer in the edge of the field. When I looked out before bedtime the feeder was askew as obviously the deer were attempting to get a snack. So the plan is to fill any feeder in reach of deer with only as much food as the birds can eat in a day.

I manage to have plenty of birds in the garden without a feeder. Since bird flu has been found in Long Island, I have not put put up the feeder, as I don't want to attract any birds too near the chicken coop.

The turkey vultures took off a month ago. Noticed the suet feeder was empty. Went out and put a new one in and before I got to the house a downy woodpecker was there. He must have been waiting and watching. He is a frequent visitor.
