I am planning on buying one and am wondering if I need to purchase the special tools along with it.

Interesting you asked that. I don't have one but am thinking of taking cuttings from my arborvitaes and junipers and creating bonsai trees.
I think what tools you need would depend on the size and whether you can use existing tools for the trimming. Maybe you can wait until it needs trimming and see if the tools you have now work on it? What kind of tree species will you buy?
My aunt and uncle (now deceased) had their own rock garden nursery. She specialized in the rock garden and native plants. His specialty was in bonsai. They had quite a unique garden and nursery. I wished I had spent time with them and learned more about bonsai.

I always wanted to start one from my Japanese Maple, but never did...coulda, woulda, shoulda... B-| I don't think you need anything special for them, lilolpeapicker ... Just various gauge wires (depending on the plant) for bending and shape training... and a nice sharp pruner...

So this thread made me curious so I did the google "caring for a bonsai" and HOLY COW the info! I tend to kill artificial house plants so don't go near live ones >,<

I'm planning on attending a Plant Faire next weekend at which the Bonsai Club will be having a booth presumably to educate the art of Bonsai! It's one of the reasons I want to attend.

A friend of mine gave me one that belonged to husband. After he passed away she figured I would like it because I like to garden. Well I couldn't say no to her after her husband had just died. Well needless to say it took about a year but it died. Whenever she asks how it's doing I just tell her it's doing fine. I don't have the heart to tell her the truth.

lilolpeapicker , the Bonsai Club had a great booth. Lots of information, lots of different trees on display. One of the members gave a 20 minute talk with pictures that I thoroughly enjoyed. They are having a special 3 hour class midmonth, but I have a previous commitment with my granddaughter so can't attend that one. But their monthly meeting is at the end of May, so I am planning on attending it. Oh, and that's my "bonsai" tomato on the table. I put it there to take a pic and then I heard someone behind me comment on it, LOL They stressed Native plants in your area as best performers. He said that although Japanese Maple are lovely and often used, they require special treatment to overwinter. Pots must have drainage because trees don't like wet feet. Old bark takes time. And pruning, shaping with wire and Patience seem to be the most important tools of all.

I buy a Bonsai tree from my local nursery garden center These kinds of plants or trees need care. Pruning is the most important technique used to shape trees and keep them miniature and the best time to prune your tree is during Spring. The most commonly used Bonsai tools are pruners, branch cutters, root cutters, wire cutters, pliers, and Bonsai scissors. The specialist Bonsai tools include a pruning saw, tweezers, brush, mesh, grafting knives, scalpel, and rotary power carving tool.

Bonsai is a special houseplant and a miniature tree designed with special art. For example, its roots and stems are shortened and planted in a container-like pot. In order for the Bonsai to take on a special shape, it is pruned in a special way or its twigs are wound.

Bonsai is a special houseplant Actually, the majority of bonsai are NOT houseplants. Most of them are meant to be grown & maintained in an outdoor setting year-round with winter protection. The reason the majority of them die is because people treat them like houseplants. Only tropical bonsai can be kept indoors.
I've owned several different types over the years, & managed to keep quite a few for quite a few years. But you really do need to be dedicated. It's a serious culture & doesn't stand for any neglect whatsoever.
