We got one for the Princess about 18 months ago. It was expensive, around $100. I find the battery needs charging more frequently, maybe it is wearing out. She does bark less with it on and excessively when it is not on. So maybe just having it on even though it may not be working all the time is a slight deterrent. She has become accustomed to the neighbors and their activities and does not bark at them anymore. She will bark at people walking down the street. She has a path worn around the fence line, she can see both side streets, the street behind us and the front street and has it down to a science. She will sit on the deck and intently watch a neighbor's house, they have 2 dogs they walk twice a day. She waits and watches for them!
Been looking for a different type, found one called Super Hush Puppy which uses sonic sounds instead of a shock and the price seems reasonable. It does require replacement batteries which it states will last 3-4 months. The sounds increase a level if dog continues to bark. Some reviews are good, some not so good. But I figure people who write bad reviews are possibly not using the product correctly.
Anyone have any experience with these sonic types? Ideas?

I bought one that sprays a lemon balm mist for our 8 month old Chihuahua. I find the constant yappy barking really irritating - he'll bark at trees, hydro poles, laundry on the line, as well as the standard dog bark issues. We also have a very calm 5 month old Pomeranian, and she was learning to bark when he did. It was really working well for 2 weeks, then stopped spraying in spite of refilling. I never thought to check the batteries! (Thanks, Mumsey!)
I have a 'sonic chaser' over my strawberry bed. It was installed when we were dog-less (2 longest years of my life, but necessary), and the yard became the feline trysting spot. The Pomeranian is a digger, so I kept it up. While it seemed to have kept the cats from spraying and crapping in the strawberries, the dogs seem to get accustomed to the sound quite quickly. Verbal, positive and negative re-enforcement is key.

Barkin dog? Big voice, big stick. First yell "Shut Up" then give the critter a good whack with the stick. If he barks again..... repeat!

Well then, go ahead and let the ****** bark! If you are not willing to discipline your pet, perhaps you should get rid of it and buy some marbles to play with?

When I say "Big Stick" I don't mean a 2x4. Just go down by the creek and pick out a nice springy willow about half an inch thick at the butt and tapering down. This ain't going to break any bones, but a whack with it will get the critter's attention.
22 LR........ Buy some marbles.
