Yes, my friend's son and family live in Texas and they just got their power on this afternoon. I think it went out Tues morning? Got gouged for propane, but needed it. After reading some of the reports here, I feel humbled, but darn it was cold for me too here in SE LA. Predicted to go to 15 but I think it was more like like 20. Stayed below freezing forever the next day. Our problem were ice on the roads. People here are not used to super cold snaps and icy roads, but hey, they're dangerous for anyone. There was snow just West of where I am, although I'm glad I didn't get any. Hard to stay warm in my humble abode so a friend had me stay 2 nights. Enjoyed the company, kicking back on the couch staying warm and watching TV or reading. Cooked a NY cheesecake in a springform pan that was to die for. lol. So different to see the streets of the French Quarter basically deserted on Mardi Gras Day due to the pandemic and weather conditions like icy roads. Thursday night will be 25 so look out; I'm prepared to make that vegetable beef barley soup. Finishing off a small pot of split pea soup. Stay warm and safe everyone. Could find like so here's something keep one warm after shoveling snow. 1 C cold water 1 tsp Turkey Better Than Bouillion base 1/4 tsp rubbed sage Ping of ginger 5 twists black pepper. Heat water microwave 3 min;Stir in remaining ingredients. Let sit 1 minute.Tastes like turkey dressing. Credit to Chief Longwind of the North on Discuss Cooking.

desertwoman, Thanks for the thoughts. We are fine. Power came back on this morning at 3:00 AM. Waiting on the water now. I've got lots of water for toilets and such but we are drinking bottled water. I've got enough bottled water and pre-freeze tap water saved up to last for another couple of weeks. Don't know how long we'll have to boil tap water. Most of our landscaping decisions have been made for us.... Alan

Fluctuating above and below freezing here - snowed a little over 2" of wet snow, changing over to sleet the rest of the time. Disgusting out there, but I consider myself lucky, compared to the weather in many areas! Good luck to all of you out there in these trying times.

Don't know how long we'll have to boil tap water. When we were stationed in Spain in the '70s we used to add 15 drops of Clorox Bleach per gallon of water and then let it sit a bit. Worked well, as we avoided all kinds of nasty stuff in the untreated water supplied by our village. You could actually see sewage floating from upstream in the small river the village took the water from. Many people got dysentery ordering sodas with ice cubes at the local bars (which were more like cafes with beer). We did this only once and got so sick. The doctors asked if we had had any ice cubes. Never made that mistake again.

Been thinking of Texas off and on all day. My Aunt Polly lived in Bay City, she has since passed. If I were younger I'd be heading there as a volunteer. They sure need help.
We count our blessings, all we have to worry about now are potholes and flooding.

Ahhhh, Temperature rising, birds are singing, soon we'll be back to our normal, regular COVID-19 routine....
Supposed to be 62 today! I can hardly wait. Going to move all the machinery (tractors, mowers, etc...) out of the shop and clean that place up a bit more. Then as soon as the temp is above freezing, start uncovering to see what made it and what didn't. I think the greenhouse is mostly okay. Except for the few <20 degree nights that the power was out, the heater was going non-stop.
It's a good day so far, I'll know more when I turn the shop water back on.
Y'all stay warm.
Alan

We got to mid 40s today, with clear blue skies. Snow is melting!
When we went to town, to pick up something I had left behind, had two sightings of someone wearing knee length shorts!

Snow started about an hour ago...big beautiful flakes. Now I hear sleet hitting the outside window sill. We are home, probably for the week. Shopped abundantly on Friday and can’t think of anything I need, except to see my kids and hug the grandkids. Someday...

Spring is coming. Planting season. Be prepared. Can't wait. I'm getting the WD-40 worked into my old rusty winter bones to be ready.
