Not a happy thing to see here, they are gonna take down my barn one of these years.... We don't like them either. Since there isn't any arsenic in treated lumber any more, they get into that too now. Some times, but not always, paint will stop them. A friend of ours has a BAD problem with them in their barn. It has so many holes I don't know how it is still standing.

Recently read that structures painted with oil based paint repels them. Latex based paints have no effect and they eat right into wood. Pepper sprays and moth balls will deter.

They are such a pain! At my old house they were going crazy. I put steel wool in the holes and then sealed them. That is one reason I now have a brick house.

We have vinyl siding and the only exposed wood is our deck and in our car port. DH patrols those areas on a regular basis and sprays & caulks holes when he finds them. But we have had them drill holes in tool handles too...those are a real pain!

We've historicaly had problems with the big bumbles around our unattached garage, but for the past couple of years, they seem to have given up on it, maybe too perforated now. Meanwhile, they are now everywhere in the open garden area. Their come-and-go variable-pitch humming sounds like people talking behind your back. Creepy. ??? They do seem to keep wasps and hornets at bay. Anyone else notice this?

Hmmmm........ I reckon a fly swatter would take out 3 carpenter bees quite handily?
