Last week I noticed something had been digging under the back steps to the house. Figured a woodchuck had moved in. Let Clyde dig around to drop the hint that it was an unsafe place. A few days later, my son piled some good sized rocks in the hole. Today I noticed that whatever it was had dug around the rocks. Clyde set to work trying to dig it out again. Sure seemed unlikely that he would dig a woodchuck out, but I figured it might discourage the critter further. Soon a rather pungent "smoke" began emanating from the hole. That just encouraged Clyde in his endeavor and he dug all the faster. A minute or two later, he pulled a skunk out by the tail, stinking mist spraying everywhere. I was a good distance away and the smell was awful. That dog was undeterred. This is the fourth time he has taken a direct hit from a skunk, and the second time he proudly presented me with a dead skunk chew toy. Good thing he has a barn to sleep in, cause he ain't welcome in the house for a few days at least.
I should note that I really actually like skunks if they stay in the fields. Kinda cute and they don't cause much mischief there. Not so welcome in the yard and henhouse though.

Smell isn't too bad today. Probably helps that he is a smooth coat BC.

Good thing he doesn't sleep in the house! We had dogs regularly sprayed when we lived in the country. One day at 1:00 in the afternoon, I opened the back door to go to work, there was a skunk right there! Acting weird and wobbling around. No doubt sick or rabid. Called a neighbor to come take care of it.

Lord I hate when my collie gets sprayed. Takes 2 weeks to get it out of all that fur.

There is a preparation at Petco or Petsmart that can instantly take away the odor, for some reason I am thinking Skunk Away, it's a liquid. I was told about it years ago when a extreme skunk perfume lay at my back door. The way I figure it that I had left the back door open when I went to bed one night and a skunk was searching around or just walking by when my cat charged the back door and scared it. That odor permeated the back of the house wicked.
So I tried this preparation and it worked phenomenally. I thought that odor was going to be around for days. But I don't know if it is something that can go onto skin or not (or fur). All's I can say is that the stuff worked.

Ya, skunks are interesting. I had one come in the garage to feed on the cats food. Then it decided to stick around and went behind one cabinet and called that home. ( The garage foundation is 8 inches wide, the wall only takes up 4 inches of it. Since the foundation sticks up about 15 inches from the floor, when you put a tall cabinet up against the wall, there is this 4 inch space behind the cabinet above the cement foundation. )

I am not that big a fan of skunks. It would take weeks for the smell to go.
