I will have two 8 quart bags...(ordered) I have (so far) 4 trays of 3/cell packs...36 cells per flat... Total of 144 cells to fill... Approximately...about how far will 16 quarts of seedling mix go? Thanks for help with the math here...

This link wore me out.............. www.greenhousemegastore.com/product/ultimate-seeding-mix/soil-less-mediumI just fill, and get more if I need it. hahhahaha There is a calculator on there............. Then I fell on this............. www.selectedplants.com/seedlings.htmShoo....................hahhahahahaha I use a 3.8 cubic foot bale of miracle grow seed start mix (or equivalent). I start by cutting open the top of the bale and digging a bowl shaped depression into the top of the tightly compressed mix. I then pour in a gallon of water and mix thoroughly by hand. My seed flats are sitting beside me so I place one on a piece of plastic and quickly transfer a scoop of the mix onto the tray. I spread the mix into the cells and pack it lightly with my fingers to the desired depth which for me is about 1/2 to 2/3 full. I fill as many trays as the moistened mix allows, then pour another gallon of water into the bag of mix and repeat the process.

I use a 3.8 cubic foot bale of miracle grow seed start mix (or equivalent). I hope it's really an equivalent that doesn't contain the Miracle Gro chemical fertilizer that their seed-starting mix does. Wayne

waynesgarden ,
I was copying a comment on a link.................hahahaha
I could NEVER bring myself to dump a gallon of water in a big bag of potting soil..............too scary.
I hate potting soil you need to wet down BEFORE you use it. I like to fill pots and set in a pan of water and let it soak up from the bottom. Less compaction. I could probably stuff a heck of a lot of wet potting soil in a 72 cell tray doing it the WET way.
But I ain't afraid of the potting soil...............too old and ugly to worry anymore................hahhahaha

My 8 qt bag is more than enough for 2 trays of the small 72 cells/per tray. I think you have it covered .

Come on folks. Just us a little common since here. Unfortunately common cense isn't common any more. Buy a bag or make your own and fill the trays.

Thanks to all for your replies! Your answers and the links are very helpful. meatburner, I have common sense...I just did not have the knowledge of the question I was asking... I am planning to go to a garden store soon which is not at all nearby to me, which sells the seedling soil that I would like to use... If I needed to purchase more for my flats, it would make sense to purchase it then and not make an unnecessary future trip. I am simply trying to plan ahead...

So true, Ahntjudy. For some of us, it's important to be as frugal as possible with money. I used to be in that position. Now, it's time for me. I don't want to spend time on things I don't enjoy. And that for me is driving around in traffic to shop!

I thought I was using common sense (not "common since" or "common cense") when I went to the helpful link in Pepperhead's post earlier this winter. It helped to give me an idea how much I had to budget for filling about 40 flats and a couple thousand 3 1/2" pots.
Common sense often means asking questions when information is needed. And it still seems to be pretty common here, from what I see

My answer is alway more than you think, LOL. I usually do over buy and then use the left overs the following year for the first starts. I admire those of you that can accurately calculate the amount of soil you need. I seem to have a learning disability there.

I always have a little leftover as well, but I don't buy "seed starting mix." I use ProMix for both seed starting and potting soil. I mix it with compost and worm castings for potting soil. I went through 2 whole and 3/4 of a third of a 3.8 cubit foot 60 pound bales last year. I have a lot of pots....I am at peak pot at the moment. I don't think I have room for one more.

I actually have close to 4 bales left! That is because I got them so cheap (around $20/),so I stocked up - might not have this forever! Plus, I have plenty of space.

If I needed to purchase more for my flats, it would make sense to purchase it then and not make an unnecessary future trip. Well, I agree. Of course, we didn't know that tidbit..........not that that would have mattered for the question. Well, if ya have too much.............only ONE solution ahntjudy............ Plant some more pots!
