lisaann, I decided to just harden them off normally and planted them outside when the soil temp hit 50 degrees. I have had the low tunnel covered a few nights and tulle over the broccoli which has worked out nicely. I planted them out a couple weeks ago and also direct sowed some seeds. The seeds have germinated as well. I have to be real careful with the plastic tunnel through the day as I cannot always check it on my lunch hour. So far, it's all good.

I'm hardening off mine since 3/25. Had to bring them in yesterday though. Weather got dumb here again! hahhaha
I'm doing Sun King broccoli and Amazing cauliflower. Hoping to set out On 4/1 in the garden with milk jugs and birdnetting.
Those tender plants would be devoured by birds here in a MINUTE, if left unprotected! Dang!
What varieties did you go with?

I planted Waltham 29 I got from Baker Creek last year. The birds haven't bothered the broccoli but dug up every bok choy and lettuce plant when they sprouted. I reseeded them and covered with an old screen door. That seems to have worked.

Waltham does good here in the fall. Not so much in the spring here though.
I have one package of frozen broccoli left to use from the freezer............Then I must wait for fresh! Does your broccoli crop of frozen produce last till we get to harvest again?

No, I try to put some back but eat it too fast. It is one of those crops I never grow enough of.

I am doing broccoli for the 2nd year, last year used starts from the nursery.
this year growing two kinds
last year, at the cg we used 'cold pile' compost that was loaded w/ bug EGGS that ate everything we started, starts and seeds, argh...
no idea what will happen this year. I have broccoli starts going in the back yard right now...and cauliflower (one broccoli is from the bulk bins!)
last year, we covered w/ row covers, only to discover the bugs were IN THE SOIL and thus sealed them in - sheesh
ah yes, gardening...

lisaann, just picked a nice head but I don't know how to insert a picture from my file. It wants a link and not an image from my computer.

Using Photobucket is really easy once you get used to it. Check out the "how to" section at the bottom of the page for instructions.
Because this is a free forum, we don't have a big company behind us paying for storage space so that we can post links from our computers. It's an additional step but it's worth it to keep our forum after Rodale closed the OG Forum down in March.

Will be making some beef and broccoli stir fry in a little while. I thawed out an extra rib eye from last week to use with the fresh broccoli. Will also have a fresh leaf lettuce salad with nice sized early onions I thinned a few minutes ago. I have had ripe strawberries several times today out in the garden. Wow, this time of year is simply awesome.

Thanks DW. Actually, I type my text msg and post that. Then hit the edit button and a link shows up in the upper right that allows you to post from your computer. Weird but it works just fine.
